The British Isles includes Great Britain, Ireland, the Channel Islands (Guernsey, Jersey) Isle of Man, Isle of Wight plus a bunch of other islands in the seas around Great Britain and Ireland.

Is that not the uk or GB or commonwealth ????????????

Great Britain was called this to differentiate it with Brittany (France) which at the time belonged to Britain and which was known at the time as Lesser Britain.
A bit like Greater London or Greater Manchester.
It has nothing to do with Greatness, rather than size.
