And SA this time of year has unpredictable weather (their winter) much prefer it in Jan/Feb with no football. The Lowveld is fantastic at that time.

I think Dennis Lillie is a bigger legend in Oz...

You are right GR but Phatitis was referring to football being more important than the Olympics in Aus, hence referrence to the olympic swimmer.

Football is just worthless trash :D

More important than the Olympics as a matter of fact!

I should have been in South Africa at this time....

Not really!

I would say that Harry Kewell is more famous than Ian Thorpe. Although he is a great athlete, he does not enjoy the same status as Harry Kewell, some Aussie Rules players, Rugby League, and Union players.

The Socceroos are big business these days. It is a good side comprising some really big household names in Australia and Europe!

Very true!

Australian Cricket Players also enjoy super star status in Australia. As do Aussie Rules players, Rugby, and then the Socceroos.

Leyton Hewitt also has a far larger profile than Ian Thorpe.

World Cup is of very high importance to Australia. Soccer is the most popular participation sport by far.

Proposed anthem for England

England currently has no agreed national anthem, with "God Save the Queen", the national anthem of the United Kingdom, often being used in sporting events in which England competes separately from the other Home Nations. There are calls for this to be changed,[5][6] however, and a 2006 survey conducted by the BBC suggested that 55% of the English public would rather have "Land of Hope and Glory" than "God Save the Queen" as their national anthem

Shite. This is much better:

We touched on this a few days ago... Land of Hope etc is too backwards looking, too nationalistic in a jingoist way.... My vote's for Jerusalem, a far more aspirational song with universal appeal. Already adopted by rugby fans as an unofficial anthem i believe.

Oh and the CY anthem shouldn't be so, so, so similar to the "motherland" one.

This should be the CY Anthem, says it all really ..... ( our O's fav)....

It's melodic, pleasant and yet it still has a degree of pathos...

Can't stand Lleyton Hewitt but remember Yvonne Goolagong with fondness - fantastically stylish player. :D

I don't like Leyton that much either. I prefer Sam Stosur.

When my in laws moved to Australia from Athens as refugees, they moved into the country and were neighbours with Yvonne for a short period.
