Actually, football or soccer as it us known in Australia is very important. The A League is fully professional, and soccer is the most popular participation sport. The World Cup channel SBS is winning the ratings as well.

To Australians, all sports are important.

And yes, the country was really hurt when going down to Germany the way they did. When the Australian National Team play, they sometimes do so before a crowd of 100,000 fans. The only other nations that achieve such crowds are Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina and Colombia.

Soccer is up and coming in Australia, and high profile players such as Cahil, Neil, Kewell etc are more famous than any Australian Olympian. There are also well over 300 Aussies playing in the Premier League, Serie A, Premiera,
Bundesliga, Portugal, Greece, Turkey, Belgium etc.

One more thing. Well over 40,000 Australian fans have travelled to SA. The Australian Team has the largest supporter base other than the host nation. You would have noticed that the German fans were litterally drowned out by the noisy Aussies.

Was that noisy weeping and the Germans drowning in Australian tears?

It ended up that way. The Aussie Fans were silenced/humbled.

No one was expecting such a thrashing. Australia has high quality players. It is a side that can give anyone a good run.

The Dutch Coach is a little negative. Australia needs to be playing an attacking type of game even against high quality opponents such as Germany or Argentina.

I believe he will be sacked after the cup.

Ian Thorpe is the most famous son of Aus - Everybody knows him as the thorpedo.
And SA this time of year has unpredictable weather (their winter) much prefer it in Jan/Feb with no football. The Lowveld is fantastic at that time.
