Portugal goes as Portugal to Olympics and WC...
Hell..EVERY COUNTRY on EARTH goes as themselves to Olympics and WC!

It's to do with the game being pioneered in Britain. The (English) FA was the first football association, the Scottish FA was second, the FA of Wales the third. Along with the (Northern) Irish FA each 'home nation' has one vote on the International Football Association Board (IFAB) which controls the game and determines the rules. The rest of the world (FIFA) also has four votes, not enough to outvote the Brits.

If the UK were to have a single national football team the Brits would lose control of football.

The Premiership was the top league in the world, end.

However, we are seeing a shift from top players in UK leave for other countries.

Spanish league is good but Serie A is shite.

The players that I speak with either dream about playing in Premiership or La Liga, fact

BTW, Great Britain, unlike most other major nations, does not enter a united football team to compete at the Olympic Games, for political reasons, because they know it would put a question mark over why the Brits have four separate FA's who, together, control football.

Nothing to do with politics or any other mad ideas . England, Scotland , Wales and Northern Ireland are all seperate countries with their own football leagues .

And as such should they represent themselves at the Olympics and international affairs. NOT as GB but as England, Wales and Scotland.
The union jack should not exist.

But that's not really what's happening is it?
Only when it suits them..

Can you explain why Welsh clubs Swansea and Cardiff play in the English league then? And why these four seperate countries compete at the Olympics as one country?

Don't forget the Ancient Greeks had City States against other countries or even whole Empires. It's about the Spirit of healthy competition! After all, Cyprus and Greece represent themselves. :D
