property/land in famagusta

Postby biggiraffe » Tue Jun 15, 2010 11:11 am

Hello

My grandfather died about 30 years ago. He was a Greek Cypriot from Famagusta, Cyrpus, and was forced to leave from there when the Turks invaded. I was recently informed by an old friend of his that he owned some land in Famagusta. Since the Turkish invasion none of my family have returned to Cyprus to make enquiries about the land.

My question is: do I and my family have any rights over this land? And is it possible to make investigations to places like the land registry etc in the possibility of claiming this land.

Please excuse my ignorance regarding this issue; this forum is the first piece of investigation I've made regarding this issue.

Many Thanks

If he left it to you in his will you can claim it and have it registered in your name. I'm going through the process myself but after nearly two years I still do not have the deeds. If he died intestate you really need to see a lawyer.

Hi BG and welcome to CF

The land is still yours.

Take a few days hol, and visit the Famagusta Land Registry. Take as much info as you have. At the very least your grandad's/grandmum's name and any address in Fam, family tree with full names of descendants etc. Helps if you know where the land is of course. Speaking to friends and relis may help on that.

The registry can make a note (and that's all they will do) of your claims to the land on their records, pending a proper transfer.

This is the address of the Famagusta Land Registry...

59 Faneromenis Street
P.O. Box 40419
6304 Larnaca
Tel: 24 304288
Fax: 24 304290

with a sub-offfice in Paralimni....
26a Marias Sinklitikis Street
Paralimni
Tel: 23 821253 Fax: 23 829195

If you go there, speak to one of the people sitting at desks outside in the public waiting areas, they aren't employed by the Registry, but they know the ins and outs of the system, and for a few euros they will help you see the appropriate officials, tell you where their office is, fill in forms. They may for a few euros more do the searches for you.

But yes ultimately fear you will need a lawyer.

The old LCA was built on an abandoned GB airfield.

Oh dear ... am getting a feeling of deja-vu again.
