So what is the duration you can go without a drink so as not to be classified as an alcoholic? Medically speaking.

I wouldn't know Freddie, I don't touch the stuff. Presuming you can last a couple of tough days would be a good sign I guess.

I'm not talking about louts who are normally behaved during the week then get drunk at weekends or when on holiday and cause trouble. I'm talking about alcoholics who are addicted to the stuff.

So according to you alcoholics are sick people just as cancer patients are , diabetics etc !
Bollocks I say to that . Alcoholics self inflict their own bloody problem and are nothing more than bloody drunks or people who can not take their drink which is about 90 % of the Great British public .
I drink each day a bottle of wine , two on Sundays and bank holidays , have done so for more than 40 years , Im neither an alcoholic or a drunk , I drink and still maintain my self respect and integrity , these bloody shit that drink them selves stupid are indeed sick , sick in the head stupid bastards.

Milti, if you drink every day, you are an alcoholic. I would get my liver and blood tested if I was you. Just to see how much damage has been done.

The biggest problem of all alcoholics is their refusal to accept that they have a problem. I have seen too many people crumble because of drink. It takes a long time to take effect but once it starts, it is very fast.

Surely an alcoholic is someone who is addicted to drink as opposed to someone who enjoys drinking but can take it or leave it. Most of the weekend piss artists like to drink to excess but I doubt most of them are alcoholics. As far as I know Milti, like me, enjoys the taste of decent wine. Having said that one bottle per day is about twice the recommended consumption for a man.

But they've admitted that the recommended 'safe' limits were just plucked out of thin air with no scientific basis... like 'five-a-day'... :x

Men should drink no more than 21 units of alcohol per week (and no more than four units in any one day). Doctors orders.

Try not drinking for one whole week to see how much you miss it. Then you may appreciate how hooked you are on it.

Now have you got any more of those packets on special offer?

I think they have based the figure on the difference between what they believe can be good and what is bad for you.

Can drinking a little be good for you?
Evidence suggests that a regular pattern of drinking small amounts of alcohol can reduce the risk of heart disease in men over the age of 40 and post-menopausal women. No more than one to two units a day is needed. Scientists don’t yet understand how alcohol is able to produce this particular protective effect, but there are a number of possible mechanisms.
As alcohol also has harmful effects, it isn’t recommended that non-drinkers should start drinking for their health. Eating more healthily and exercising also reduce the risk of heart disease, have other benefits that you wouldn’t get from drinking alcohol and have fewer risks.
What’s binge drinking?
‘Bingeing’ is drinking heavily all in one go – usually meaning enough to get drunk or to be substantially impaired. Researchers refer to drinking more than eight units of alcohol for men and more than six for women, on any one day or any one episode as binge drinking. This is a useful marker for binge drinking levels but doesn’t define them. Everyone varies in their tolerance for alcohol. The important thing is to avoid drinking until you feel drunk.
Binge drinking is part of the drinking culture for some people in this country, including many young people. It doesn’t necessarily mean you have a drink problem, but it’s a major factor in accidents, violence and anti-social behaviour.

As for five a day, I have little doubt that fruit and vegetables keep you "regular", so in they do have some benefit. Of course there are alternatives to five a day in this respect but there have been recent cases where kids brought up on junk and no fruit or veg have literally been so full of shit that they required medical attention.

NHS lies and spin with regard to alcohol...

As regards five a day, they've been telling us for years that it dramatically reduced heart attacks... guess what, more lies and spin because it makes no difference whatsoever.

It is about time that politicians allowed us to make our own lifestyle choices and apply the law vigorously to those that misbehave because of them.

Yes I recall reading that somewhere recently.

But I can remember when they said coffee gives you cancer. Then much later that, daily coffee helps ward it off!

Same with margarine vs butter.

Food police.

Yep, all bollox...

Now they want us to cut salt out of our diets - without which we will die. Perhaps that is the plan...?

Of course, the parents are to blame. The spoilt generation; leaving a legacy of a dystopia.

Let us learn and guard against this in Cyprus.

The GO Church might help. Alcohol by the teaspoon-full. :D
