I gather that this young woman is an alcoholic who is not working and claiming benefit. It seems that she has managed to save some of her money and arrange a holiday in Cyprus. The BBC are going to film her holiday........I think thats about the gist of it.

Alcoholism is a very serious illness and sufferers should receive our sympathy and help not outright condemnation. If she was suffering from, say, cancer and arranged the holiday by saving up her benefits would your comments be as caustic...?

The powers that be within the UK NHS have concluded that she is entitled to benefit. Well enough said really. The NHS is there to assist people so if her claim has been approved what's it got to do with anyone else ?

If she has had the ability to save up some of her payments to enable her to have a holiday then good for her. What she spends her payments on is entirely her concern.

Someone here in an earlier reply stated that they pay income tax, social insurance payments etc etc and have not been able to afford a holiday for some time. Furthermore they stated that they were not entitled to benefit.... Well, if you are not entitled then you are not deemed to be in need of financial assistance from the NHS so tough titty mate.

I totally agree with the BBC devoting time to this womans case. If as a result of its eventual screening it helps to highlight the severity of alcoholism and assists this woman in overcoming her illness then it could result in a job being well done.

Ban her from coming to Cyprus ? Confiscate her passport ? What utter tripe some people come out with !!!

If this woman is indeed an alcoholic then what she needs is assistance to overcome it and not be slagged off by tosspots who have nothing better to do with their time.

Quite right if she's entitled to Benefits, she has the right to spend the money as she wishes.

But she has been served with an ASBO. That means she has anti-social, unacceptable behaviour problems. She's already been banned from UK pubs.

She is a public menace and like known football hooligans who are prevented from travelling abroad, she should not have been allowed to travel to Cyprus with the specific aim of making herself have diminished responsibility. What if she attacks someone?

The problem with most Cypriots is that without realising it they actually are quite right wing, but worst of all they actually believe that to drink to excess is something to be aspired to. It's only because they are peasants and do not realise the slow nature of alcoholism destroying their body.
A cousin of mine was a superb athlete. When I last saw him in hospital dying of alcohol related disease, I did not recognise him.

I see the point you are making, but I,m sure other tourists who have behaviour problems have not all caused trouble here in Cyprus.

She has been banned from UK pubs, but she is free to walk the streets so I imagine she is not considered to be a major threat to the general public.

I hope she does not cause problems, but if she does then the local authorities will no doubt deal with her as they do with local alcoholics.

In my opinion I think banning her from visiting Cyprus at this point is being too severe on her.

Damn, I thought ASBOS came from the Greek ASVOS and was some new cocktail! You know one that digs deep down and is nasty when cornered.

Fact is that the average European drinks more alcohol per year than the average Briton (culturally a non European). The difference is that Europeans pace themselves and do not try to drink it all at once. Till that custom is tackled ASBO or no ASBO, the Brits will get shitfaced when they get a chance.
