I've always said benefits should be in the form of food coupons etc not cash. coupons with a name on and require ID (so they can't be sold on)

Better still - Dubai. Then let's see how they deal with the drunken idiot.

So she's turning "her life around" hey? Hmmm. Perhaps she should have picked Devon, or the New Forest, or somewhere equally as quiet, as opposed to a holiday island notorious for the drunken antics of its visitors. Or is she planning to steer clear of the nightclubs and is just going for the scenery?

0 0 12:41PM, Jun 11, 2010Jelleetots69
She shouldn't be eligible for benefits! She isn't over 65 or disabled so get to work! @whatthehell: unfortunately, your comment is so true :( what a sad state this land is in.

If she likes drinking so much she should stay in Cyprus where she hasn't got a booze ban then she can drink as much as she wants there.

Dear Exakta, It is with deep regret that I must inform you that the BBC has looked closely at your request for a holiday and rejected it for the following reasons:- 1. You admit to working all your life, thus contributing to "the pot". 2. You could... [read more]

BOF, I think you are a little behind the times. You can't treat people like that. The work house mentality went out with the victorians, but you never know now that the Cons have have come to power again.

Unbelievable replies from some of you people. As someone else has pointed out we are not living in Victorian times. We are talking about a caring society.

I gather that this young woman is an alcoholic who is not working and claiming benefit. It seems that she has managed to save some of her money and arrange a holiday in Cyprus. The BBC are going to film her holiday........I think thats about the gist of it.

Alcoholism is a very serious illness and sufferers should receive our sympathy and help not outright condemnation. If she was suffering from, say, cancer and arranged the holiday by saving up her benefits would your comments be as caustic...?

The powers that be within the UK NHS have concluded that she is entitled to benefit. Well enough said really. The NHS is there to assist people so if her claim has been approved what's it got to do with anyone else ?

If she has had the ability to save up some of her payments to enable her to have a holiday then good for her. What she spends her payments on is entirely her concern.

Someone here in an earlier reply stated that they pay income tax, social insurance payments etc etc and have not been able to afford a holiday for some time. Furthermore they stated that they were not entitled to benefit.... Well, if you are not entitled then you are not deemed to be in need of financial assistance from the NHS so tough titty mate.

I totally agree with the BBC devoting time to this womans case. If as a result of its eventual screening it helps to highlight the severity of alcoholism and assists this woman in overcoming her illness then it could result in a job being well done.

Ban her from coming to Cyprus ? Confiscate her passport ? What utter tripe some people come out with !!!

If this woman is indeed an alcoholic then what she needs is assistance to overcome it and not be slagged off by tosspots who have nothing better to do with their time.

Simple Simon fails to realise that not only has his taxes paid for her trip but via the compulsory TV licence tax he is paying for the BBC crew to follow her too!

Still happy about her trip Simon?

I hope the benefits office looks closely at the amount the British taxpayer is giving her each week to drink to excess and take holidays abroad - clearly too much.
