Tests Show Big Natural Gas Find Off Israeli Coast

29 December 2010

Israel is hailing a recently discovered natural gas field off the Israeli coast, saying it could turn the country into a major exporter.

U.S.-based Noble Energy Wednesday confirmed that the so-called Leviathan gas field contains an estimated 450 billion cubic meters of natural gas.

Noble said the field represents its biggest find ever, while Israeli Infrastructure Minister Uzi Landau called the discovery "the most important energy news since the country was founded."

Some analysts say the find could be worth as much as $95 billion.

[...]

Noble Energy is also working with the Mediterranean island of Cyprus to tap natural gas reserves off its shores.

Earlier this month, Israel and Cyprus signed a deal defining the sea border between the two nations.

Reminds me of when the Ottoman Empire was carved up. The middle eastern part was purely on the oil exploration idea. Israel smelled the oil and begins negotiations to carve up the area. Typical. IMO.

The Ottoman Empire wasn't "carved up" since nothing existed of this Empire before. Various counties merely won back their independence. Some are still waiting to regain parts of their age-old territories.

Meanwhile, Israel is not carving up anything other than what is rightfully theirs - as agreed with the RoC and other relevant neighbours.

The Ottoman remnant (wishbone) - "Turkey" - shouldn't exist for much longer :D

(Oops - wrong thread. Funny how many pointers there are to Turkey's demise.)

Turkey's interest must center around its own freakin borders. Period. What is off the Egyptian, Lebanese, Palestinian, RoC, and the Israeli coast is none of Turkey's business.

The good news for Cyprus is that the Leviathan area is very close to the Cypriot maritime border:
