Ferry services to resume, hurray!

Postby Nikitas » Thu Jun 10, 2010 7:16 pm

Finally, the two leading maritime powers of the EU will restart the ferry link between them.

According to reports in Cyprus Mail, Cyprus and Greece will restart a ferry service between them. The ferry will leave Lavrion for Limassol.

For non flyers like me, and those that want to cart lots of luggage or have a car or motorbike, the ferry is going to be a welcome service.

Of course we had been clamoring for a ferry link for years, but it took the volcanic ash crisis to bring it home to the officials that relying on one and only mode of transport with the outside world was not wise.

The only thing now is to hope that the ferry will be one of those flash huge new ships that do the Ancona run. Now that would be worth experiencing!

This option is most useful.

Nikitas, do you know if there will be provision for pets to travel with the passengers?

If the ships are of the same quality as the Ancona trip then it should be a 24 hour trip.

On those ships pets can be transported as long as they are kept under strict control or in the special pets section on deck for bigger dogs. On the Adriatic lines they even have sand pits for the dogs to do their business.

Ray, 12 person cabins? Where did you see that? I have been goind back and forth to Italy by boat for years and never seen such a thing. Max cabin capacity is 4 in most ships and for economy travel there are the pullman seats, or deck in a covered area.

I managed to travel to Cyprus on a merchant ship and the cabin was a one berth with shower deal. It did take two days though and most of that time out of reach of cell phone contact.

Last time I checked out Ferries to Cyprus (coming from UK) was about 5 yrs ago and it was said then that they'd been stopped indefinitely because the ultimate destination was Israel (on account of the problems with Israel/Lebanon).

Just looking at these:

Grimaldi Freighter Cruises

http://www.cruisecyprus.com/grimaldi_freighter_cruises.htm

Interesting for those who hate flying.
