"Kandahar, Afghanistan - Thirty-nine people were killed and 73 wounded by a massive explosion at a wedding in the southern Afghan province of Kandahar on Wednesday, a senior official said.

The cause of the devastating blast was unclear, especially as insurgent attacks in the province, the heartland of the Taliban, are normally aimed at military or police targets and generally cause fewer casualties.

The toll was one of the highest in a single incident in recent months in war-torn Afghanistan.

"There was an explosion at a wedding at Nangahaan in Arghandab district. At least 39 bodies were transported to Kandahar central hospital. Seventy three people were wounded," said Mohammad Anaas, a senior official with the city administration present at the hospital."
