It's all give-The elite of Cyprus

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Postby Gasman » Fri Jun 11, 2010 9:32 am

The semi-democracy which we tried to improve and make fairer?

That's one way of putting it I suppose!

I wonder if TCs who reside in the RoC get their electricity free?

Oracle you just do not seem to be able to grasp the two facedness of most of your rantings.

One minute declaring (quite rightly) the RoC as the legitimate government of the whole island.

The next insisting they should abdicate responsibility for a large part of it.

'Occupier TCs'? Interesting....

Are you referring to ALL TCs who live in the TRNC? Or just those who live in GC owned property?

And what would you then call all the GCs who live in the TC owned property in the RoC? Here, they call them GC Refugees - should they be called 'Occupier GCs?' I live where I am surrounded by them.

And, much as it will no doubt stick in your craw to hear this - a good few TCs live in among them too and operate businesses from there. Some in the same houses they were born in there. Quite a few who left in 1974 and have since returned and living amiably among GC neighbours.

But then you'd already know that if you knew anything about 'real' Cyprus and 'real' Cypriots.

"What about the electricity illuminating the "TC flag"?

The choice being to cut off electricity to the north and douse the flag, or keep it on and have that nonsensical symbol lighting up at night. My choice is to give the electricity. For the simple reason that it shows solidarity with the TC everyday man on the street. A solidarity which is elevated and enhanced by that very flag since we prove that the TCs welfare is important enough to ignore that flag.

Cutting off the electricity would simply push Turkey into laying an undersea cable to supply the north and thus prove (in a much more tangible way than the flag) that it owns the north.

Symbols do not impress me. The more of them I see the more insecurity I detect. Substance is always more important and in the end more decisive.

If you read my previous posting, you would know that the electricity in the TRNC is generated there and does NOT come from RoC.
Do you seriously think that the Turkish Army would allow the TRNC to be dependant on power from RoC?
Ask yourself, what's the first thing a GC invasion force would do? - Turn all the lights off before they attack?
The TR army are really going to let that happen - not.

Another RoC myth about TRNC busted (again).

There are some places that have been recieving electricity from the roc since 1974 totally free. I can name one. The problem is not that they refuse to pay but that roc does not send the bill.

Thanks roc and long may it continue. So at least we are getting something for our stolen lands.

VW you are not up on the full picture. There is a certain amount of electricity going through to the north. A couple of weeks ago there was a mishap in the Pyla area and the substation in the RoC broke down, plunging a substantial part of the occupied Famagusta area into darkness.

Even during the invasion, in the week beginning July 20 1974, the electricity to the enclaves and then to the north was NOT cut off. It sounds strange, but it is one of those Cypriot paradoxes which are a fact, not an urban myth.

In any case, beyond electricity there is a whole range of benefits extended by the RoC to all citizens, including TCs, such as pensions, health care etc. In the case of TCs this is so even if they did not make all the relevant contributions because of the pre 2004 conditions. The point here being that this should be so, (being my opinion), while some think it should not.

I'm sure there may still be some "cross-over" of power lines across the green line with unmetered power being drawn-off, but this would not be to any area that was a security issue as far as TA was concerned.

I have heard that RoC supplied power to the North for some years after 1974 which was charged but never paid for, but that was then, not now.

If the people recieving benefits are Cypriots, then that is only as it should be. If they haven't made any contributions through no fault of their own, isn't that someone elses problem, not theirs?

On the topic of Pensions and Electricity

Some TC villages which are close to the Green Line aren't even connected to the North's Electricity grid, an example is Pergamos in the Famagusta region. KIB-TEK ( TC Electricity Authority), still charges for the Electricity they do not provide. "Teknecik" the power station in the North was only constructed fairly recently, in the early 90's if I remember correctly.

As for pensions, TC's who had PAID into the social security scheme pre 74 do receive payments on a pro-rata basis.

It was actually only before 1983 that that the RoC supplied electricity to TRNC on a regular basis.

Shhhhhhhhhh! Don't act smart because you're not. There’s so much about Cyprus you don’t know… in future consider ASKING instead of ASSUMING!

The "TRNC" relied on electricity from the RoC for many years! In fact, right up to 2004 they were part-dependent on the EAC.

When the TC nincompoops finally decided to buy a generator they couldn’t even offload it from the delivery ship because their crane couldn’t lift it! The RoC suggested they deliver it to Larnaca or Limassol and then road transport it north but they chose to send it back and buy a smaller one than they needed!
