Never make a Turk draw his sword

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Never make a Turk draw his sword

Postby Malapapa » Wed Jun 09, 2010 12:37 am

I've come across this letter-writing commentator on all things Turdish before but had to chuckle at his latest offering in today's FT.

Not sure why he even bothers to get his pen out when the sword is mightier.

Never make a Turk draw his sword

From Mr Osman Streater.

Sir, “Israel sails into trap of power-hungry Turkey” reads your front page summary of Josef Joffe's article “Turkey is making a play for regional power” (June 7). Yet the editor of Die Zeit nowhere in his article mentions what the Turks are really hungry for: membership of the European Union.

Turkey is not merely "power-hungry", but genuinely powerful. Its strategic location is matched by the size and quality of its armed forces.

"Never anger a Turk to the point where he draws his sword," warned Napoleon I.

The likes of Nicolas Sarkozy and Angela Merkel are in danger of doing just that. As Ataturk told them to, Turks would like nothing better than to be able to look west, to join Europe. But keep on slamming the door in their face, and Europe had better know what it is asking for.

Osman Streater,
London NW3, UK

Visitors to London NW3 you have been warned. There's a sword-wielding Turd on the loose.

That's funny I though it was "beware of the greeks even when bearing gifts"

Where have you been? Are you down from cloud nine yet?

Is Osman threatening both the UK and Germany? Magnanimous and egalitarian approach that is. Exactly how is the quality of armed forces judged? By jet fighter crashes? Naval accidents? Army exercise mishaps? On all indicators the Turkish armed forces are on or below par with the international standards.

I've been busy making contingency plans for when Turkey attacks western Europe. I was down in London stocking up on essential provisions from Yasar Halim.
