BREAKING NEWS 08.JUN.10
A group of British home-buyers in northern Cyprus have had their homes forcibly sold at auction after a land owner and developer defaulted on a secret bank loan.
The loan was taken without the knowledge of the home owners, leaving them without a place to live and no help from the Turkish Cypriot administration.
The homes, all bungalows on a small complex, were purchased between 2005-2008 on the “Kulaksiz 5” estate in occupied Vasilia village.
It is understood that all the British owners have been thrown out from their houses in spite of the fact that they are fully paid for.
The former Turkish Cypriot leader, Rauf Denktash visited the village where the auction was taking place in order to express his support to the British residents.
“Behind this there are 1400 British citizen in the same situation having houses which will be subject of sale”, said Denktash.
He added that if this trend continues the housing sector in north Cyprus will totally collapse.
“This is a bigger weapon than the Orams case. I have written letters to the ‘president’, to the ‘prime minister’ and the ‘minister of finance’. All of them are closely interested but they could do nothing with the bank. ‘President’ Eroglu told me that ‘in the new law these people’s houses would be saved on the condition of taking separate title deeds, but now nothing can be done for the victims’. They were sold, because they were in the old law. This cannot happen. Could this happen? Is this justice?” he said.
Turkish Cypriot daily Afrika newspaper ran a banner headline reading “Worse than the Orams”; the paper writes that “it has been proved once more that northern Cyprus is an appropriate place for ripping off and for being ripped of”.
Turkish Cypriot daily Yeni Duzen newspaper refers to the issue under the banner “Day of shame”.
