You don't have any problems because the signal is strong to begin with. So, the problem is really there but you cannot see it.

I have the phone and at most places I cannot get the bars to drop. When I am at a low signal area though, touching the phone at the lower left side makes the bars disappear.

Take a look at these:

Do you have access to a 3G or a 3GS, NOT running 4.0?

I have used the HTC Hero and the iphone 3G extensively, and i thought the HTC was better. I haven't got my hands on the iphone 4 yet though...

Customer service from HTC was great too (in UK)

A 3G yes

Great, if you are NOT running 4.0 on the 3G then try the following:

Dial *3001#12345#*. Once you press call you should enter the field test where instead of signal bars you get an actual number (a negative number). Could you please post the number? You get out of the field test by just clicking the home button.

Because Apple decided that they no longer wanted people to have access to this information. Interesting eh?

You cannot see it with 4.0.

I have a 3G as well running 3.X and I noticed that at places where I had really strong signal (close to -51) no matter how I was holding the iPhone 4, the bars never dropped. At places with a not so strong signal (close -80) the bars were going from 5 to 1 or even none. So I am pretty sure that all phones do it. It just depends on the strength of the signal.
