Mehmet Ali Talat doesn't allow EU Commissioner to enter NC

Postby fi » Fri Jul 29, 2005 1:36 pm

In the news today: EU Commissioner for Health and Consumer Protection Markos Kyprianou was not allowed for the second time by Mehmet Ali Talat to enter the north of Cyprus in order to meet with TC political parties on behalf of the EU.

Mr. Talat’s move has been criticized as leading the TC to self-isolation.

Mr. Kyprianou said:
“As I care for the 450 million of Europeans, with which a work together and for whom I take initiatives, I will care for the interest and well being of our fellow Turkish Cypriot compatriots”

That really is an absolutely pointless and self-damaging decision to make.... one must wonder what hidden reasons he must have with regards to this..... did he mention?

The reason this person was refused entry as I understand it was because they refused to show their identity card at the border as required by the TRNC laws. If this is true then this refusal to show their idenitity card is a purely GC based political act , from a EU offical.

Probably a wrong move Mr Ali Talat. I think this refusal of entry achieves nothing and infact may harmful to Turkish Cyrpiots.

Health is a less contentious political issue which may be lay ground work for cooperation on the difficult issues.
