Yes its an environmental disaster, but, I sense a certain amount of hypocrisy and finger pointing from the american oil industry and political establishment here.
1. The defective well head which blew was the responsibilty of Haliburton who were supposed to cement around the well head to prevent an explosion.
2. Trans -oceanic was the company who actually owned and operated the rig and equipment including the Faulty blow out protector.
3. BP were leasing the rig only
Now everyone is expecting BP to pay and even Obama is jumping on the bandwagon in order to appear as a "Tough Guy" against big business- nothing to do with upcoming elections and his flagging approval ratings.
Meanwhile Exxon et al happily piss oil all over Nigeria - no one gives a shit.
America says little and does less about the Israeli " situation".
Just watch US media\news outlets and you will see the spill coverage dwarf's other issues with BP being made the scapegoat.
To use an easy analogy -
Mechanic A fits brake pads to a hire car
Hire company B rents you the car with a driver who knows you have defective hand brake.
The brakes fail , the handbrake fails and you crash into a shopfront.
Everybody blames you the passenger as you are quite wealthy.
