I thought 'Jerusalem' was better.

Agree with D.... Jerusalem is so full of hope and aspiration for better futures, an international anthem with none of the nationalist pollocks.

Will now listen to it.

Ahh yes but ... And did those feet in ancient time ... (W Blake poem - now known as 'Jerusalem') - reminds me my daughter will be at Glastonbury at the end of the month!

... but they hadn't started singing that when I posted!

ABSOLUTELY! Much more stirring!

I'm no nationalist. But I have to admit it does move me whenever I watch it. The crowd in Hyde Park was quite a sight.

As for 'God save the Queen' - I'd hate that DIRGE - I'm with those who say they should ditch it in favour of something a tad more CHEERFUL!

*mind you - talking of dirges - you should just hear my old Convent Grammar School Song lol!

Does Cyprus have a national anthem?

(Gawd, just reminded me of the old alma mater's song.)

As to the CY Anthem.... is it the one that bears an uncany and remarkable similarity with the anthem of another place?

The only thing worth a titter about ours is the line ...

Honour we bring the dear old school, our mother bright and GAY here's to the kind and friendly rule ... never to sway

lol!

I do wonder if they've changed the lyrics slightly these days?

These things rarely do. Edwardian England is still here. Takes a bit of looking for I guess nowadays, and it wears modern clothes, but the aspidistras are still watered and how does that poem go?... the one about the Church clock at ten to three? ....and is there honey still for tea? :)

Gawd Bill, you'll have me feeling homesick at this rate!

Not very likely tho - as my first visit back this past Xmas was when I managed to fall very awkwardly on the ICE and only just recovering from my injuries now!

*never going anywhere frozen ever again
