Military spending - Cyprus and Turkey largest increase

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

"Imagine, just imagine the impact on the UN,the EU and the world public opinion if RoC declared they would abolish the CNG sell all their military equipment, and spend the defence budget on measures to improve trust ,understanding, and respect between all Cypriots..."

Not very far from Cyprus, in the West Bank and Ghaza, one side has done just that. And the response from Turkey's erstwhile ally is to bomb the crap out police stations, which it regards as centers of Palestinian power. So the next logical step is to abolish the police force, probably, and see what else the officials of the other side will arbitrarily regard as a center of power and the game will go on like that till no one takes the appeasing side seriously. Then no doubt they will get together to determine that side's fate in some far off place in the framework of some "international conference".

No one takes you seriously unless you can prove you can make trouble. The National Guard can make trouble, it does not have to win anything. The ability to stand its ground for even 24 hours is enough. In this game, as in any other it is the strongest side that must take the initiative. And the only thing I heard about this in the last five years from the strongest side was Erdoghan's boast at Burgenstok "we got what we wanted without removing a single soldier or returning an inch of land" Live on TV and hardly confidence inspiring.

Those that like to overestimate Turkey's military might are obviously forgetting the recent experience of Israel at the hands of the realtively lightly armed Hesbollah. Hardware is not impregnable, that should be clear by now.

I understand the emotional attachment to an armed force and the psychological need to believe they are going to be useful against the enemy,Nikitas...And I also know it is politically impossible for anyone to propose to abolish the military...But I do believe that force of arms have got us where we are,and it could not be possible for the military option to get us out of the mess we are in...We need to think outside the square...However,I am not holding my breath...The trouble is Turkey has much bigger problems on her plate than Cyprus, and has much more troublesome "enemies"...It doesnt have to do anything but wait for the status quo to become the permanent solution...It is the RoC that needs to do something drastic IF they want to regain some control over the North...

Judging by the proposals put on the table by Christofias it is doing something substantial. Perhaps not drastic but substantial for sure- accepting 50 000 settlers and the rotating presidency before any bargaining started that is a major concession for which he has been criticised. Other than offering to dispand the NG what other bargaining cards does he have? The other side definitely stands on the principle that everything must be subject to bargaining and no initiative is forthcoming unless it is in exchange for something.

The RoC couldn't afford me, but I am willing to offer my services for free. I am willing to be the RoC's first Kamikaze Commander for it is my duty, and responsibility towards my long suffering country!

The ego has landed!
