Gasman, who called Magosa Ammochostos? Are you making this up?

No! It's on all the signs on the way there from Aye Nick crossing lol! I've always assumed it was YET ANOTHER name for the place!

Gawd most towns have at least THREE names - maps are mostly useless in the North.

I give up. Fortunately the whole island is so small it doesn't actually matter how lost you get - you will be home by teatime!

Why the feck would I make anything up anyway? Not my style. I know what I see with my own eyes.

AMMOCHOSTOS - signs for it along the roads from Larnaca to to Famagusta or Gazimağusa/Magosa.

Now you've made me LOOK IT UP!

Here's what I came up with:

Famagusta - the name of the city in Turkish is Gazimagusa, and in Greek, Ammokhostos.

:P

Magusa derived from Fam'Augosto/August lady. Turkicised and shortened.

Gazi Magusa = Gazi is a veteran of a war. Hence Gazi Magusa/aziatep/Gazi Mustafa Kemal Pasha.

Ammochostos = sandy beach?buried in sand?

the tere is thesuburb of Varosha/Marash

Are you sure of that spelling and it does not say Ghammokhostos? How come our GC cousins never use it's greek name.

They are not MY GC cousins. Why don't you ask them.

I had no idea it would spark a fuss when I merely wanted to show Fig that it is known by many different names.

And YES I am pretty sure of the spelling on the road signs.

Because I typed it from memory and I've never seen the word before in my life until I came to Cyprus and started driving towards Famagusta lol!

Sorry Fig.

I will send the PM.

I got a bit bogged down in looking at what is said about Gazimaguza lol!

I am easily distracted.l
