Can religion unite Cyprus?

Postby Omer Seyhan » Thu Jun 03, 2010 1:39 am

A silly question...perhaps not. The Cypriot Orthodox Church may not have as much followers as before but it is a force to be reckoned with in Cyprus. Some of its bishops / archbishops treat Cypriot unity where power sharing, bilingualism and multiculturalism will flourish as bad as 4th century Arianism or Nestorianism.

Yet there are some liberal archbishops who give me hope like...I hope I get his name right, Archbishop Nikiforos. Recently, the Archbishop Chrysostomos flew to Istanbul. Is the Church leadership changing for the better? is it forced to change ?

PS: What religion if any do people here practise?

I always though 97.5% GC and only 2.5% TCs are religous, but hey percentages have never been my stong point. I get stuck on 2.5% TCs and my calulator refuses to go any higher.

There is only one high priest worth mentioning Omer. His name is Neophytos of Morphou. His brother is a high school head master. He is the only head master who dared invite TC pupils for a beautiful meeting, about three months ago, in Larnaca. Of course the insults he heard are countless. Neophytos is of the same school of thought as his teacher brother. Beautiful people, who love instead of hating ...

I won't vote. But, my impression of the GCs I have come to know and befriend is that - though most of them are not 'religious' in that they attend church regularly (except the very old ones - and some of those say it is because they would be shunned by their 'villagers' if they didn't) - they still adhere to the Greek Orthodox Church rituals and rules when it comes to getting married, having children christened, etc.
