This is what I meant about visiting Canada, NZ or OZ. That's what they do - they regale you with stuff they are proud of in their country. They fall over themselves to direct you to things they are proud of and places they'd like you to see.
And they don't have the EU or any claim to be 'Modern Europeans' to crow about.
And Birk is quite right - it is a bit of a culture shock at first. (I sadly admit you get used to it and tend to notice it less) when you see the way they treat their surroundings.
All the graffiti everywhere (not even artistic graffiti just scribbled black paint spraying - in Limassol even on the outside walls of the church), the fly tipping of old car bits, domestic appliances and builders rubbish at beauty spots, coke cans, fag pkts, plastic water bottles and such littering the sides of the road and choking the drains. And I have never, ever, seen a Cypriot pick up after their dog. They look quite astonished if they see you do it - and some of them quite disgusted too.
let me get this straight...you've moved to my country, have fired a bunch of assumptions regarding the state of New Cross and Lewisham (sorry I meant Cyprus) and the levels of cleanliness of Leicester (sorry I meant Cyprus), the levels of town planning of Glasgow (sorry I meant Cyprus) and the lack of national pride in Birmingham (sorry I meant Cyprus)....and want me to prove and list the reasons I'm proud of my country? How's this....I'm proud I'm Cypriot because it could be worse..(I could of been British)
I'm also sorry about the fact that every male teenager in Cyprus does 26 months of national service rather than enter Uni at 17 so that they can really get that national pride going during freshers week and student uinion happy hours.
BTW, would you like to know the percentage of GC's and TC's that go to uni as opposed to the dog poo gathering Brit chav asbo youth?
Sorry about the dog poo....no matter what we do we still can;t convince the Cypriots that they should pick up after their dog's shit. Must have something to do with the fact that we have other less important stuff in our life....

Being proud of your country stems from certain amount of rightwingism even if you are not aware of it. What is there to be proud of a country. Isn't that what Hitler and Mussolini used to blind their people before their started their disastrous escapades. Hang on a minute, I know who was most proud of their country, there was a little organisation called eoka who were very proud. One thing I still do not understand to this day though is why on earth they would want to gift it to another country. Perhaps you can explain it, what?
