You can be Turkish Cypriot & Cypriot

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Well I know they still rely heavily on local 'mafia' to sort problems. I know who my local one is in Larnaca!

From your threat to 'send the boys in' - I guess you think that's one of the things about Cyprus that you take pride in?

Perhaps you'd serve your purpose better by posting to extoll the virtues of the things about Cyprus that DO give you pride in your country?

I love Cyprus. I do rave about the things and places in Cyprus that I love. I encourage others to visit Cyprus.

Doesn't mean there are things about it I really don't like or wish they'd do something about. As with any country, anywhere in the world.

Assuming that there is no pride for our country is an ass of an assumption.

Don't get too defensive,DT...She is looking at it from a Western point of view...To Westerners if you do not take care of your environment it means you do not respect nature or you have no pride in your country...
She means well...I know what she means...I shake my head in disbelief whenever i visit Turkey and see how much rubbish people leave behind wherever they go...It is partly cultural I know...But it comes as a shock anyway... :(

I posted on another thread lots of photos of places I love in Cyprus.

It might be more useful DT if you were to list some of the things that make you proud of your country and proud to be a Cypriot. Or some of what you consider to be its proud achievements.

This is what I meant about visiting Canada, NZ or OZ. That's what they do - they regale you with stuff they are proud of in their country. They fall over themselves to direct you to things they are proud of and places they'd like you to see.

And they don't have the EU or any claim to be 'Modern Europeans' to crow about.

And Birk is quite right - it is a bit of a culture shock at first. (I sadly admit you get used to it and tend to notice it less) when you see the way they treat their surroundings.

All the graffiti everywhere (not even artistic graffiti just scribbled black paint spraying - in Limassol even on the outside walls of the church), the fly tipping of old car bits, domestic appliances and builders rubbish at beauty spots, coke cans, fag pkts, plastic water bottles and such littering the sides of the road and choking the drains. And I have never, ever, seen a Cypriot pick up after their dog. They look quite astonished if they see you do it - and some of them quite disgusted too.

I know it is not funny, Gas, but one has to laugh...They probably think you are very miserly, not even wasting your dog's poo...

I know people here in Sydney (no need to mention their ethnicity  )

who carry plastic bags and pretend to pick up after their

dogs if there are other people around...

Go on have a good laugh...Better than crying...

let me get this straight...you've moved to my country, have fired a bunch of assumptions regarding the state of New Cross and Lewisham (sorry I meant Cyprus) and the levels of cleanliness of Leicester (sorry I meant Cyprus), the levels of town planning of Glasgow (sorry I meant Cyprus) and the lack of national pride in Birmingham (sorry I meant Cyprus)....and want me to prove and list the reasons I'm proud of my country? How's this....I'm proud I'm Cypriot because it could be worse..(I could of been British)

I'm also sorry about the fact that every male teenager in Cyprus does 26 months of national service rather than enter Uni at 17 so that they can really get that national pride going during freshers week and student uinion happy hours.

BTW, would you like to know the percentage of GC's and TC's that go to uni as opposed to the dog poo gathering Brit chav asbo youth?

Sorry about the dog poo....no matter what we do we still can;t convince the Cypriots that they should pick up after their dog's shit. Must have something to do with the fact that we have other less important stuff in our life....

Has anyone ever seen a French man/woman poop-scoop? Is this the measure of sophistication?

The only dog-walking rituals are conducted by lonely Brits wanting to eye-up other lonely-Brits. Isn't this the Gassy category ... Cow-eyes over doggy-poo....

Just pick-up or shut-up. Plenty toff-Brits ignore this "ritual" in rural Dorset.

Rural Dorset or off the beaten path is one thing. I know landowners in the west country who prefer you leave it where it is for the crows! I spent the 15 yrs before moving here living in West Penwith and South Devon I am not totally ignorant of country codes.

In some places that are off the beaten track (like the sand dunes) leaving dogshit everywhere actually upsets the ecological balance and what grows there.

But dog shit left in the High Street, outside shop doorways, outside other people's front gates or other busy public places is a slightly different matter. Not nice for small children to get it on their shoes. Well I don't think it is - I'm odd like that.

And rural Dorset has has laws about you not picking up after your dog too. (Oh look! O lecturing about Brits and the UK!) Still that's allowed for you isn't it?
Still I suppose that was easier than you making a list of things that give you pride in being Cypriot, or things about Cyprus that make you proud of Cyprus.

So do these rural Dorset people chuck their coke cans, fag packets, plastic bottles and fast food containers all over the place too (because they are not hung up about it?)

By the way, as you are obviously blissfully unaware that it is a problem for Dorset - here you go:

While out dog walking on Dorset's heaths you have a great opportunity to enjoy some of the most important heathland areas in Europe. Find out how you can help maintain them and help protect the habitat and it's threatened wildlife.

Be aware of soil enrichment; most of us are already aware of the importance of picking up after our dogs in public areas. However a few people may not feel it necessary when out on the heath and do not realise how this affects the heathland habitat. Heathland plants have adapted to the very poor soil. Enrichment by dog faeces allows other more common plants to invade which displaces the rarer heathland plants.

Surprised you didn't know that without being told.

But, hey, you don't give a shit about environmental matters in the country you call 'home' (this week anyway), why would you care about them in the country whose indigenous population you despise?

Exactly why I picked rural Dorset! :D

And since most GCs who own dogs live in rural areas (dogs traditionally kept for hunting) that has never been an issue (see above encyclopedic knowledge on poo-matters/soil enrichment)!

Now the Brits come along with their dogs in every townhouse and apartment, and there's the new problem! Dog poo on pavements ...

Always quote your sources gassy
