Where can I find more details on this? I wouldn't mind throwing on a pair of skates when I'm visiting Cyprus this summer to see what you guys have.. :)

Greetings Mach, nothing concrete at the moment I'm afraid, just a coupla cross border illegal games at the moment. Limassol has an unofficial team, presumably ex pats. with some level of hockey back round.
Tell you what buddy, scrap the holiday smack the puck around idea and get your Cyp papers in order, we want a national team...

Ice Hockey

Postby jim street » Thu Jun 03, 2010 4:31 pm

Hi,

interesting stuff on Ice hockey here in Cyprus. why are the games classed as illegal?. are they going to be arested for forming a team and traveling over the border?. why are they not allowed use the name of the City they live in?. Is it not the task of the KOA and the Olympic federation of cyprus to encourage such events like these as a way to bring both sides together in some sort of way?.

thanks

Correct, but as of yet that hasn't happened, as the teams aren't registered under the auspices of KOA. It might take a while.
Read the previous comments, I was on the same path, but was quickly shot down by a coupla tactless trolls.
Read Paphitis's comment, he explains it pretty well.

Advertising playing in the "turkish rupiblic (their spelling) of northern cyprus" on the poster is a bit like organising a fund raiser for Al Qaeda in Wall Street.

Sorry, what are ex pats? What's the skill level of the hockey being played?

Mighty tempting suggestion, I'll give you that! :)

Thanks,
Chris

Well, British, , Canadian, American Cypriots I would imagine... From what I gathered there is also a pretty strong interest from the Russian community.
Thanks for taking an interest buddy, bring your gear next time you're in CY, we need all the support. :D

Ice hockey

Postby jim street » Thu Jun 03, 2010 11:45 pm

Another question if i may, why do they need to register with the KOA? Are they entitled to some funding or some sort of support from them?. Can the KOA step in and say stop playing?. Ok so it would nice to have the backing of a body such as the KOA but any soccer team i have played on didnt need to registered with anyone except the league we played in and we also playeds from around the country. Let me ask this question, if the limassol team played a team from nicosia or paphos would people still feel angry about it all??

Lets try this one more time

Your poster says its playing a game in "the turkish republic of northern cyprus"

Do you realise that this is the name the turkish govt has chosen to call the millitary occupied part of Cyprus its forces hold since the invasion of 1974?

My house in Morphou is not in a different country it is currently held from me by Turkish troops that occupy my ancestral town.

If you morons couldn't piece 2 brain cells together before making that poster up in LIMASSOL!!!! then you should be playing ping pong in a mental asylum rather than ice hockey in occupied territory.

We're playing sport in our own country, with fellow northern Cypriots, which is the EXACT opposite of what Turkey wants prove to the world that the communities DONT get along, that they DO want partition and that the invasion WAS justified. How about that knuckle heads?

As I understand it, the visitors comprised ex-pat team members, the GCs on the team having decided not to travel North.
So what you are saying about "..playing sport in our own country.." unfortunately isn't quite the case.

Ok DT lets try this another time also,

100% agreed with the poster. now lets forget the political side of things for one minute and maybe you can answer my questions,

1. why do they need to register with the KOA?
2. Can the KOA step in and say stop playing?
3. if the limassol team played a team from nicosia or paphos would people still feel angry about it all?

thanks
