I had forgotten the cane layer. In English (American?) they call the mud brick mixture adobe, in Cypriot it is called "plitharka" in Greek "plinthos".

I notice that of all the materials you can use for shade none is as effective in blocking out the radiant heat as cane and it is cheap enough to replace every year. It must have beena good insulator in the roof and lightweight.
