I don't know what happened to you. Of course you can support partition if you like, I won't ever agree with you but why be so nasty about it unless there are other reasons you have changed your mind - emotional. You need to remove the negative energy from your aura. I can sense it from here and it isn't nice. Good Night.
I am the same BirKibrisli alright...You really want to know what happened??? Well, very briefly I kept getting slapped in the face by those who believe Cyprus is a Greek island or TCs are Ottoman remnants guilty of all real and imaginary evil going back to 1571...
When I talked about living in fear of the EOKA as a child in the 50s I was told I was imagining it all or exaggerating it to justify Turkey's expansionism...When I talked about the terrible days at the end of 63,huddled up within the walls of Nicosia, hearing eyewitness stories of people being killed left right and center,I was told I was a lier,it was the TMT that was doing all the killings...When I talked about the TCs not having a choice but walking away from the government in fear of their lives,I was told I was a lier and a thief because I wanted to justify Taksim, and the TC gains over GC losses...When i talked about ENOSIS being the fundamental catalyst in the Cyprus problem I was called a barbarian who simply had no respect for the democratic rights of the majority...When i talked about the Sampson Coup being like a death sentense for the TCs I was told I was a traitor who sided with the invader to fulfil my long cherished Taksim dream....Need I go on???
I simply woke up and realised I was living in a fools paradise, that Cyprus as a unitary state as I proposed was not a safe place for the TCs, what with so many GCs with hatred and bitterness in their hearts and revenge on their minds...
I don't doubt your experiences for one minute. Its great that you shared it for all read and I wish life was better for you.
However, in the heat of inter-communal conflict, fear and killing, it may be hard for you to believe that there were many good people and friendships that lasted throughout these times. Why else would Greek and Turkish speaking Cypriots rush to visit old friends when the Green Line opened? Why are those friendships in Cyprus flourishing now? Why do people join bi-communal groups? And why do Cypriots abroad meet each other when they do not have to do so?
I think the fear of EOKA B and TMT silenced a lot of people - it was their aim. It is precisely because of the terror they brought to peoples lives why people that are free today come here to the Cyprus forum posting and communicating with each other and meeting other Cypriots in person. EOKA B and TMT thought they could terrorize people to segregate them forever, but without using arms to resist, people are resisting their policies / goals and reversing slowly what they have achieved.
Multiculturalism which you have in Australia is the way every state is going today - so TMT and EOKA B are irrelevant and those who fight for them are going against a global tidal wave - they have not a chance in hell of succeeding.
I believe a future Cyprus that we must not delay in building should be one of democrats and moderates, but also one where we take law and order seriously so to protect our people from the fear they lived in before that was created by paramilitaries. I want future generations to not suffer what you suffered while helping you move on.
Whatever happens Cypriots are destined to share their small island so they need to work together.
