What is the purpose of these wax effigies?

What is the purpose of these wax effigies?

Postby Gasman » Sat May 29, 2010 4:32 pm

I've seen some almost life size whole figures (Andreas Apostolous Monastery), some fat baby sized. This gruesome decapitated head is in the Chapel of the Holy Cross in the Troodos Mountains.

I was told by someone that Turkish Cypriots believe that if you burn a person's bodyweight worth of candles when they are ill - they will get better. Is this something of the same sort?

Who makes them?

I believe that worshippers would bring a wax effigy of an afflicted organ or body part to the church and pray in the hope they would be answered and the illness would be cured. Or something.

Last time I was there I saw wax kidneys, hearts, livers etc.

tHATS RIGHT. tHE WIDOWS OF THE MONASTERY ARE FULL OF THESE FIGURES REPRESENTING DIFFERENT PART OF HUMAN ANATOMY.

Sorry about the capslock.

They believe in the curative powers of prayer accompanied by replica diseased body parts etc.

Maybe I just didn't spot the 'spare parts'? Too busy looking at the huge ones?

I will keep an eye out in future.

Sounds much the same belief as the one I mentioned above. It's all in the wax - obviously.

I will make a wax cast of my injured leg and lug it up there!

Last time I visited Apostle Andreas, I saw a 1x3cm effigy of a penis with the inscription…

“Don’t let it fall … inshallah! Y-Fronts.”

You did well to spot it if it was Y-Freds real life size. Did you have a magnifying glass by any chance? :?

Maybe it works...for Cypriot women at least. Don't have one of the longest life expectancies. Maybe the should get effegies of tits so they don't need plastic surgery.

Do the old nuns keep the massive pigs running around up there as a p***-take or have there always been porkers at Apostolos Andreas?

What nuns?

Last year when Ag.Andreas was discussed there was only the one left.

I dont know if that number has altered.
