The UN clarified today the confusion in the message over reference to the Security Council Resolutions.
Diaz told Bayrak Television that the UN Chief had referred to the relevant Security Council resolutions and not all Security Council resolutions.
In a statement to the BRT, UN Spokesman Jose Diaz said that the UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon had meant that he had been encouraged by the agreement reached between the leaders to resume the talks on the basis of relevant Security Council resolutions and not all Security Council resolutions.
He also pointed out that the UN Chief had referred to the UN Security Council resolutions as such in his latest UN Security Council report.
“As you can see this is the term we always use and most recently in the latest UN Secretary General’s report on the Cyprus negotiations, published last week” Diaz added.
“OBJECTIVE IS TO TAKE THE PROCESS FORWARD”
President Dervis Eroglu’s Special Representative for Negotiations has defined the Turkish Cypriot Side’s goal as to take the solution process forward within the framework of the United Nations parameters and to bring it to a conclusion once the Greek Cypriot Side acts in the same direction. Evaluating the negotiations process to the TAK News Agency,
Kudret Ozersay said President Eroglu and the Greek Cypriot Leader Demetris Christofias made a good start in general on Wednesday.
On the issue of single sovereignty, he said that what really matters is how these concepts will be defined and added that the issue will remain subject to discussions.
As for the Property issue, he said that the two sides confirmed the convergence paper on the topic and agreed to work for further convergence.
Referring to the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon’s message read out during the first meeting between the two leaders, Ozersay said there had been some politically-motivated interpretations on that but pointed out that the issue was clarified by the UN itself.
Ban’s message brought some criticisms for making reference to all UN resolutions for the solution of the Cyprus problem, missing the word “relevant”.
Yesterday, the Spokesperson for the UN Peace-keeping Force in Cyprus Jose Diaz told BRT Mr. Ban expressed his encouragement over seeing the leaders resume negotiations on the basis of relevant Security Council resolutions and not all Security Council resolutions.
