THREE SEPARATE FIRES BROKE OUT IN THE LEFKE REGION

Postby halil » Thu May 27, 2010 7:01 pm

Three separate fires have broken out in the Lefke region.
The fires at two different points in Lefke have been brought under control.
But, another fire which broke out in Yedidalga is continuing to spread. According to information received from the Mayor of Lefke Mehmet Zafer, the first fire broke out in an area near the Lefke European University.

The blaze started in a field covered with bushes for an unknown reason and spread to a nearby olive grove.
The fire was put out by fire fighters who rushed to the scene.

Another blaze broke out in an area 200 meters away from the scene of the first fire.
Fire Fighters are still trying to put it out.

The third fire is reported to be bellowing through a wooded area just above the Yedidalga Primary School.
It’s not known what caused the fire, but high winds and dry brush have caused the flames to spread quickly, making it hard for fire fighters to put it out.

Fire fighting and civil defence teams from Morpho, which are battling the flames, are supported by teams from Nicosia, Kyrenia , Tepebaşı (Yorgoz)and Çamlıbel(Mirtu).

Fire helicopters from Turkey and UN still working in the area.

Fire also passed to buffer zone.GC fireengines are waiting at the boarder now, to stop the fire, not to spread towards the south.

its going to be long night for Cyprus again .... wind is starting again....

I hope our idiots gets good lessones from this disaster and very soon they buys fire tanker plane and helicopter. Can u imagine u have to wait plane and helicopter to come from Mersin !!!!! What happening in those lost hours.Heavy winds does not wait . does not wait for u to get ready.
They have such a potential to buy those tankers. U know the politicians they like to spend country sources for their own benefits.

United front to quell fire

FIREFIGHTERS battled throughout the afternoon yesterday to contain a fire in the northwest of the island.

The blaze broke out around 3pm in the buffer zone near Ambeliko village. Initially the fire spread towards the occupied territories, but shifting winds created a second front in the government-controlled areas.

Authorities got permission from the United Nations for firefighting choppers to make a several drops over the buffer zone.

In the government-controlled areas, the blaze incinerated around 1.5 square kilometres of shrubland and pine trees. In addition to ground forces, 13 fire engines, four helicopters and one firefighting plane of the Forestry Department were deployed. The police, Civil Defence and the British bases participated in the operation.

The fire was under control by dusk. A Fire Department spokesman said forces would remain on standby throughout the night.
