Bir, here is one method that works for me. FInd the one carbohydrate you eat most often and the one that you seem to be hooked on, for me it is bread. And simply give it up. No other changes, neither increases in other foods or decreases. It works. For most Cypriots eating bread is like a reflex, not an appetite.

Thanks,Nikitas...Sounds sensible...I think I eat equal amounts of bread and potatoes...It would be easier for me to give up potatoes,I think...Also one can get healthier breads like wholemeal or rye or soy and lindseed or what have you...I will keep you posted...I need to lose about 25 kilos... :(

I gotta loose weight too, I've put on 16 kg in the two years I've been back in Oz. My weakness is eating junk food, I hardly ever have breakfast and usually have lunch at around 3 o'clock. Then in the evenings I just go nuts and eat anything. I'm seriously thinking of bringing my grandma here so she can cook me some good old fashioned food. Not this crap Aussie's call a meal.

Now I remember how fussy I was about what was being cooked. I'd never eat kolokas or bogrulce (those long beans, i don't know the English word for it) and never eat the left overs from the day before. I just took everything for granted.

Now I've got another 3 loads of washing to do, fcuk that :x

Anyone got any tips for staying off junk food?

My best tip for staying away from convenience junk food is - don't buy any.

I shop locally so tend to get just what I am 'out of' every day at the corner shop (it doesn't stock much other than fruit and veg and basic groceries and, of course, alcohol).

When I lived in Limassol and was getting ready to go to Grand Cayman for a month to stay with my son, I was horrified to find I'd put on about 2kg and that most of the clothes I intended to take with me were now too tight! Then, as now, I walked 2km and swam at least 20 lengths a day. I really hadn't noticed this piling on over about 8 months.

I don't eat much so could only put it down to eating junk snacks at lunchtime. I used to breakfast very early (about 5am), work for a few hours at the Cat Sanctuary, then go down to the beach for a swim and sunbathe every day and, while there, would buy a bag of crisps, a can of coke and a cornetto! That was my lunch. It was sheer laziness so's not to have to bother to take stuff with me.

I ate fresh food later in the day then would head for the chokky biscuits or similar late at night if I was working on the computer, so I could eat as I worked.

I stopped buying cola and crisps and choc bars and biscuits. I bought bottles of water and froze them to take to the beach and cherries (love them) to take with me for my lunch there.

I lost the weight very quickly without doing anything else different. Just by cutting out the junk snacks.

Swimsuits, popover sundresses, pull on shorts and T-shirts are fatal for allowing you to pile on weight without noticing it - they sort of grow with you!

Mind you, by the time I returned from the Caribbean, I had to start over again - most food on offer there tastes as if it has been cooked in sticky syrup! That, or deep fried. But very tasty!

Umit,
I will give you the following good advice,as it is no good for me...

Learn to cook simple foods like soups and omelettes...Eat as much at home as possible...go easy on beer and wine, sweets and chocolates...Learn to make healthy sandwiches using rye bread, and control the portions you eat...Plus walk everywhere...And drink nothing but still or sparkling water...Eat small amounts about 6 times a day...Don't do what I do,do what I say...

And leave your poor grandma where she is...she would be bored to death in Oz...

Giving up bread seems the best idea for loosing weight. How can we give it up when since childhood bread has been the staple of all our foods. Bread with everything. My neighbor even eats bread with his macaroni bulli. Eating bread is an addiction (as far as I am concerned).

I must try/I must try/I must try..................................
