Christofias – Eroglu first meeting

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Christofias – Eroglu first meeting

Postby paliometoxo » Tue May 25, 2010 4:19 pm

NICOSIA – Following a meeting with President Demetris Christofias, Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu said the government controlled areas were in full support of the upcoming peace negotiations, scheduled to begin on Wednesday.
Eroglu commented that the first subject to be discussed would be the property issue, noting however that the Turkish Cypriots intended to remain on the island.
He added his wish that more understanding would be shown to the Turkish Cypriot side during the talks.

Eroglu should also note that if Turkish Cypriots intend to remain on the island they ought to start behaving themselves.

Second, strengthening links between the two communities is essential. The island has been split for so long that generations have grown up with no idea of life on the other side. It is very difficult for schools, law enforcement agencies, soccer clubs, and telephone, electricity, and water companies to cooperate across the Green Line. Teenagers can't even send text messages across the divide. Trade between the communities is limited.

Here is what a few eminent world persons think of our situation....

I like the way they say in the article:

When we visited Cyprus late last year, we noticed how few women and young people were engaged in politics. Old men (like us) dominate public debate, and we strongly urge Cyprus's leaders to make more space for those whose voices are not so readily heard.

Then at the bottom says that all three are members of the 'Elders'

Prior to the meeting, Downer read a personal note of the SG of the UN. Christofias and Eroglu greeted the message included in the note but later on, Chrostofias's partner in the government, Karoyian of DIKO, embarked on a scathing attack on Downer and the Secretary General. He more or less claimed that these two are scheming against the Cypriot people. This attack brought the wrath of DISI parliamentarian Christos Pourgourides and Katsourides, AKEL's Parliamentary spokesman.

DIKO and EDEK are the two parties that have rejected every single effort made to solve the problem since 1975. They are lining their rejectionist policy with much patriotic jargon and while the ship is going down, some naive and stupid people are cheering them on top.

Here's what one of these 'Elders' (Jimmy Carter) said about Cyprus just before Christmas:

If this effort fails, I don't believe Cyprus will be blessed with a continuation of the current situation. I think that the present differences, which are already serious, will become more so.

The island will remain divided, foreign troops will stay in place, and there will be no restitution of property claims. Failure may lead to an abandonment of hope, with a permanent division of the island and escalating distrust and animosity between the two communities.
