18 NATIONAL GUARD MEMBERS INJURED DURING TRAINING EXERCISE

ALL NEWSPAPERS report in their lead stories that a National Guard conscript was yesterday fighting for his life after sustaining critical injuries when an anti-tank shell accidentally exploded during training at a Larnaca camp. Two other officers were also in critical condition, while 15 other conscripts suffered lighter injuries. Sergeant Christos Papallis was flown to an Israeli hospital that specializes in military traumas. According to reports, the troops were training on the Apilas disposable anti-tank weapon when someone armed the shell after mistaking it for a dummy. Asked whether the use of live ammunition in training was allowed, DM Mavronicolas said that there are standard procedures which were followed without any problems.

For the G/C and T/C warriors who have been apart of the National Guard /Army Reserve at one point, is safety normally exercised? Is this event just one of those exceptions were mistakes were made?

Its just an exception. The last time smthing like that happened was during the removal of mines 10 years ago when i think 2 soldiers were killed. Accidents happen.

I have met T/Cs who are in the Turkish army based near the St H. castle. The translator used the word Reserves, maybe incorrectly.

Source, have you ever held a weapon? This is not a friendly fire incident in combat where you have over 70,000 troops, tanks and helicopters running around.
This is a case were "basic trainees" were given a live anti-tank round, and told to go train with it.

I am one of the people who campaign for more spending on National Guard, work with Russians, Russians put pressure on British and give Russians base in Cyprus - Then Russia give us Military aid... Around $1.2 Billion Dollars. Count for rent as well. Buy new weapons with that to defend us against the Turks.

The accident happened because instead of an exercise shell being used a normal shell was used during training. This has been acounted to a human error and is the worst accident in the history of the National Guard.

The minister of Defence and Chief of the Arm Forces have both given in their resignations.
