In fact if it was up to the local Cypriot population Cyprus would be part of the first Greek Republic, and there wouldn't be any need for any subsequent union.

During the Greek War of Independence in 1821, the Ottoman authorities feared that Greek Cypriots would rebel again. Archbishop Kyprianos, a powerful leader who worked to improve the education of Greek Cypriot children, was accused of plotting against the government. Kyprianos, his bishops, and hundreds of priests and important laymen were arrested and summarily hanged or decapitated on July 9, 1821.

Just a thought.

Maybe, but not because this would be what the Cypriot people wanted.

It's never been a Greek island either. Greece is another country. You need your passport to visit there.

I bet there are a good few Cypriots now who are heaving great sighs of relief that Cyprus was never 'annexed to Greece'. Otherwise they'd now be subjected to the same swingeing and humiliating AUSTERITY measures that the Greeks are!

Maybe those who believe so strongly that they 'are Greek' should show solidarity with their imagined country of origin by offering to give up as much as the average Greek is going to have to. A sort of 'period of lent'!

What's to stop them flying over there and standing shoulder to shoulder with their admired Greek demonstrators, strikers and rioters? What better way to prove just how 'GREEK' you are?

Cyprus was never given a true independence. If we were truly independent then we could also unite with the rest of Greece if we wanted without the need to take the approval of anybody else.

Traitors are those who accept whatever some Imperialists force on Cyprus. I don't.

When independence is democratically chosen by the Cypriot people by majority vote, without any outsider force and blackmail, and with the Cypriot people being allowed to write their own constitution which will serve their own interests, not being imposed one which serves the interests of others, then we will have a REAL independence.

Cyprus has been a Greek island for 1000s of years. Unless you will now claim that there was nothing Greek until the creation of the modern Greek state in the 19th century.

The only reason that Cyprus is a separate country is because this has been imposed on us. What you can not do is force us to change the identity of our island.
