U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has praised Turkey's contributions to world peace but encouraged it to be more active in solving its own conflicts with Armenia, Cyprus.
Ban spoke at Istanbul's Bogazici University on Friday. He is scheduled to attend an international conference aimed at exploring ways to bring stability and restructure Somalia on Saturday.
Ban said Turkey's peacekeeping efforts in Lebanon and Afghanistan as well as mediation in the nuclear standoff with Iran is important but suggested that it build diplomatic relations with its eastern neighbor Armenia and seize "the critical moment" when U.N.-sponsored talks resume on ending division of Cyprus on May 26.
