Turkey condemns election in Karabakh

Turkey has said it won’t recognize the so-called “parliamentary elections” in the Nagorno-Karabakh region on Sunday as the elections are a blatant violation of UN Security Council resolutions and the principles of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).

A statement released by the Turkish Foreign Ministry on Thursday said there will be an election in the Nagorno-Karabakh region, contrary to expectations and decisions made by the international community. Armenia-backed separatists in the Nagorno-Karabakh region set up a “republic” following an armed conflict in the early 1990s between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the disputed territory and regularly hold elections, which are dubbed “illegitimate” by the international community.
The statement said the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is the primary roadblock to peace, stability and cooperation in the South Caucasus, adding that it hinders relations and cooperation in the region. The statement also mentions that the illegitimate elections constitute an apparent violation of United Nations Security Council resolutions and OSCE principles.

The statement said that during a period when there are intensive talks to find a peaceful solution to the Azerbaijani-Armenian conflict under the auspices of the OSCE Minsk Group, it is obvious that holding “parliamentary elections” in the Nagorno-Karabakh region is a move that will negatively affect efforts for a peaceful solution.

As the Foreign Ministry condemns the event, which will violate the political unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan, it will not recognize the illegitimate elections, which do not have any binding nature under international law, the statement said.

Azerbaijan Calls Nagorno-Karabakh Elections 'Illegal'

Azerbaijan's Central Election Commission has denounced as illegal the upcoming parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan's breakaway Nagorno-Karabakh region.
Friday, May 21, 2010By RFE/RL

BAKU -- Azerbaijan's Central Election Commission has denounced as illegal the upcoming parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan's breakaway Nagorno-Karabakh region, RFE/RL's Azerbaijani Service reports.

The commission said in a statement that the May 23 elections violate Azerbaijan's constitution and international law. It says holding elections and referendums on the territory of Azerbaijan is the exclusive prerogative of the country's Central Election Commission.

It further condemns as interference in Azerbaijan's domestic affairs the arrival of international observers in Stepanakert to monitor the voting.

The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry has also condemned the upcoming elections.

Sergei Nasibian, the head of the Nagorno-Karabakh election commission, told the Caucasian Knot website on May 19 that Karabakh's leadership attaches no importance to the statements. He said they serve only to promote solidarity among the Armenian population of Karabakh.

How to profit from warArmenian and Azerbaijani forces fought a three-year war that ended in 1994 and left Armenian forces in control of virtually all of Nagorno-Karabakh and large parts of the surrounding territory.

Azerbaijani parliament welcomes resolution adopted by European parliament
Fri 21 May 2010 | 12:05 GMT Text size:

The vice speaker of Azerbaijani parliament has commented on the resolution of the European Parliament adopted on May 20.

“We welcome the resolution adopted by the European parliament that contains an appeal to Armenia to withdraw its troops from the occupied Azerbaijani lands. This is an important document of one of the influential organizations as the European parliament. If Armenia considers itself to be a member of the world community, it must fulfill its demand and withdraw from the occupied lands”, vice speaker of Milli Medjlis Bahar Muradova said.

She said the number of international organizations urging Armenia to observe international law is growing each time and this is a serious warning that the world does not intend to close eyes on its occupational policy on Azerbaijan.

“As is known, the UN, Council of Europe, OIC and now the European parliament have adopted resolutions condemning Armenia for its occupation of Azerbaijani lands. We expect the NATO Parliamentary Assembly to take the same decision too. That is, the world has got assured about the nature of Armenia. And I do not think that it will avoid responsibility and continue protracting the Karabakh conflict”, she said.

As for the criticism of Armenian FM Edward Nalbandian regarding the resolution adopted by the European parliament, Muradova noted that “this is an old tactics of the Armenian leadership to express resentment over the just resolutions of international organizations”. “However, this will not help the as time is pressing and the world expects Armenia to show a constructive approach to the conflict settlement, otherwise, it will face the rest of the world”, Muradova said.

Turkey renews call for end of trade embargo on Turkish Cypriots
By: The Associated Press

21/05/2010 5:00 AM

The Turkish foreign minister says Turkey will open its ports to ships and planes from Cyprus if a trade embargo on the breakaway Turkish Cypriots is lifted in return.

Ahmet Davutoglu says the world should allow Cypriot Turks to trade through its sea ports of Kyrenia and Famagusta as well as Ercan airport, in Nicosia.

Davutoglu was speaking in Istanbul on Friday before a meeting with U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon expected to focus on Cyprus.

Cyprus was split into an internationally recognized Greek Cypriot south and a breakaway Turkish Cypriot north in 1974 when Turkey invaded following a coup by supporters of union with Greece.

Turkey does not recognize the Greek Cypriot government and doesn't allow its ships and planes to enter Turkish ports and airspace.

[QUOTE]since when does turkey care about the un laws?[/QUOTE

The real issue is who exactly cares about UN laws? They are laws that require the approval by 5 countries in the security council who manipulate any vote to suit their own interests. America went to war with Iraq without a security council resolution, its actions in latin america and many places around the world can hardly be described in good terms, china and russia might have some of the worst human rights records put together, and france has raped till the 1950's how many of their african colonies exactly? The only people who care about UN laws are the ones that find its in their interest to do so.

Boom, im not sure what your getting at by posting these articles? Turkey is a country, like many out there, that acts primarily in its own interest and will use any means it sees fit to further its interests. Isnt it more funny that the ROC who has been whining the past 30 years about human rights violations actually supports armenia in its territorial dispute against azerbaijan? If anyone should have sympathy for the azerbaijannis its the ROC, not turkey.
