The Radisson Hotel (Istanbul)

Postby Schnauzer » Wed May 19, 2010 12:12 pm

I just had a rather amusing thought which I hope will raise a smile (or other) when I relate an experience I had whilst resident there some years back.

I was obliged to visit the toilet soon after dinner (excellent fare) and it was at that time that I considered the fact that it was cheaper (or so I reasoned) to wipe one's arse on a million lira than it was to use the toilet paper.

Not really sure why this thought suddenly came to mind, perhaps others may have comparative memories of 'The Good Old Days'.

The toilets were attended by a resident caretaker and obviously it was customary to offer the chap a gratuity since he (at that time) was in charge of the issue of toiletries.

Whether or not he was entitled to be there or whether he took it upon himself to create the position is a moot point, the man was worthy of congratulations for his enterprize if the latter case is true.

A couple of million was quite a respectable tip and I would imagine that it would have cost about five million for a roll (or pack) of toilet paper (not sure, perhaps someone knows better) which does seem to confirm that (minus the host at the entry) it would be cheaper to wipe up on banknotes than toilet paper. (tongue in cheek of course)

Whether or not the attendant was operating some other business in the vicinity at the same time is another moot point, he was quite a young chap and the premises WERE abuzz with politicians and their ilk AND the young chap was very fond of the aftershave AND we all know the preferences of most politicians............... I rest my case.

Bearing in mind at all times that we are dealing with a 5 star hotel in Istanbul.

Just had a quick perusal of your previous posts, it would appear that you are so preoccupied with financial matters, you could hardly be expected to recognize a little levity when presented.

Therefore, your only response MUST home in on any opportunity to alleviate the pressures of expectancy concerning the value of the T/L and the result is a veiled insult.

Try to develop some semblance of a sense of humour my friend, it is not ALL dollars and cents you know.

I assume you will recognize that your smutty comment is not appreciated.

You mean 0.00000222 to a pound sterling!

It looks good when you compare 1,000,000 Liras with a single Pound but the figure above is what happens when you compare 1 Lira with 1 Pound!
