North- where are all the people?

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

North- where are all the people?

Postby Nikitas » Sun May 16, 2010 9:22 pm

I was idly scanning on the TV this afternoon and caught a CYBC broadcast on the villages of the north. Places I knew as a kid- Angastina, Mousoulita, Palekyhtro, Vitsada, and other villages on the old railway line.

The commentary indicated that these villages are mostly occupied by settlers. And as we often hear there are thousands of settlers in the north, often the figure is pushed by some commentators to a million. But all these villages were empty and a fair proportion of the houses seemed derelict.. So where are these people?

Regardless of the settlers, where are the main population centers of the north? Would it be right to say that the population gravitates to the main urban centers, Nicosia, Kyrenia, Famagusta, like people do all over the world?

Even the settlers are migrating. They have given up on muhtar X.

I have lots of photographs taken of where some of these settlers live - they give the lie to them 'living in luxury' off the backs of GCs.

Dwellings without four proper walls or roofs. Cow and a couple of dogs tied to a tree. Chickens kept in a derelict car. Abysmal.

However, they would be discounted as propoganda or bullshit by the nationalistic thugs on here who have never bothered to go see for themselves.

So Gasman how do these people make ends meet? From the short clip shown on CYBC it seems that they are subsistence farmers, pretty much like our grandparents back in the 50s. Is what they left behind worse than this?

And how about the TC farmers? What are they doing? Most of the land seemed to be left fallow.

I second that, post the photos. There will be the unavoidable comments, but they are always there no matter what is posted.

I do post them, but not on here.

I am accused by Northern Cyprus forums of being a rabid GC.

On this forum I am accused of being a Turk sympathiser, a carpetbagger (*totally untrue), a traitor, and worse.

You just cannot DEBATE anything sensibly on this forum.

You post a link to an article and, if it was not written by a GREEK or a GC - it is all lies and bullshit and you are accused of being worse than the author.

I do find this forum has its amusement value (as I am sure others do) but it is in NO WAY a serious discussion forum when it comes to the 'Cyprus Problem' as it is dominated by NATIONALISTS. And not CYPRIOT nationalists, but GREEK ones lol!

You have a point Gasman, but it is worth slowly chipping away at the nonsense on this forum. Posting photographs as Nikitas and denisaksulu have suggested is a good idea.

As someone who lives most of the time in the north but travels to the south and elsewhere frequently, I can assure Nikitas that the figures of one million population of the north are in no way credible. I would put it at 350,000, tops. Whilst it is true that so-called Turkish settlers are slowly increasing in number and as a proportion of the total population, it is also true that many live in the poorest of conditions, with the most insecure income, in the lowest paying sectors.

Essentially most people in the north are - like people all over the world -trying to make a living in difficult circumstances in which the bosses and the rich and the political leadership try to fleece them. Plus ca change, c'est plus la meme chose.

Strongly agree.

I've been to villages there where there was a perfectly good sound GC house to be lived in and it had been shunned, or ignored, in favour of the Turkish settlers seemingly preferring to live in the outbuildings (which I can only assume were there for animals).

Do not worry about the bastards on the forum. They have lost their sting lately.
