"Greek marbles are stolen by Brits" Turkish minist

Postby georgios100 » Fri May 14, 2010 6:22 pm

"Τα μνημεία δεν έχουν απλώς μεταφερθεί, έχουν κλαπεί.Τα μνημεία πρέπει να επιστραφούν στις θέσεις τους που είναι έτοιμες και τα περιμένουν. Είμαι μαζί σας σε αυτή την προσπάθεια".

This statement made by a Turkish minister (Gunai). Translated means : the marbles were not moved but STOLEN (by the Brits) and should be returned. He goes on to say he supports this efford (by the Greeks).

Not sure if this is the first time, the Turkish are officially accusing the Brits of steeling national treasures.

I believe that Lord Elgin actually bought the marbles from the invading Turkish army to stop them being destroyed so get your facts right! Most British people have always said they should be returned to Athens so stop continually having a go at us and get on to the British government and ask for them back.

Aah! how sweet! how incredibly moving! shame about the systematic destruction and looting of hellenic and/or christian cultural heritage in the "trnc" ... but then again words are cheap. I bet the British Museum authorities, where significant parts of the Parthenon marbles are held, are now shaking in their boots.

We shall never stop asking/demanding the return of the marbles. You might find this annoying... let me assure you, we find this offensive and unacceptable.
The British government was informed numerous times but choose to ignore the issue.

Who said the marbles were for sale?

Who said the alleged "transaction' between Lord Elgin and Turks has any basis of legality?

Who said "buying" the marbles gives you the right to keep them?

I believe the marbles have become a bit like the title deed problem. Brits want to insist on retaining the title to them even if they did go to Greece.

Beverly10, you do Georgios100 an injustice. The poor guy/gal wasn't having a dig at Brits, he was just quoting something that was good PR for turkish officialdom. You are, of course right: Elgin could not have removed the marbles without permission and cooperation from the Turks who were in control of Greece at the time. The lie and hypocrisy of the Turk minister of culture whose heart now bleeds for the return of the marbles to Greece is infuriating.

All explained very simply here (with nice pictures) on this greece.org children's webpage about the marbles:

I apologise if I offended Georgios 100 and miss read his post but a lovely trip to Athens last year was utterly ruined for us by the Greek courior on the coach trip(we paid a lot for) demanding the return of the marbles (as if we personally had stolen them) for most of the 4 hour trip so maybe I am a bit touchy on the subject.

Of course it isnt. If it wasnt the Brits it was the Germans. Check out the Bergamon temple ın the Berlin museum and another in the Brıtısh Museum

On my other PC I posted pics of them here before.
