German Oncology Centre will help meet increasing demand, president says:
President Nicos Anastasiades said on Sunday that there were still serious gaps in the provision of medical services in Cyprus, especially in the oncology sector.
Speaking at a ceremony to lay the foundation stone of the German Oncology Centre in Ayios Athanasios, Limassol, he said the project was a breath of optimism much needed in the country and praised the pioneer for the creation the centre in Limassol, Dr Nicos Zamboglou.
“We know that your efforts and those of your partners will fill a gap that exists in our country in the field that you specialise,” he said.
Anastasiades said the German Oncology Centre would provide services covering the whole spectrum of needs, from prevention and diagnosis to treatment, rehabilitation and support for patients, offering modern radiotherapy techniques.
Anastasiades said there were around 3,500 new cancer cases every year of which half needed radiotherapy. About 40 percent of these patients live in Limassol and Paphos. “Therefore 700 new oncology cases need to be treated annually in these two districts who have to travel from Paphos and Limassol to Nicosia in order to be treated,” he said.
