Hunting is the practice of pursuing living animals (usually wildlife) for food, recreation, or trade. In present-day use, the term refers to lawful hunting, as distinguished from poaching, which is the killing, trapping or capture of the hunted species contrary to applicable law. The species which are hunted are referred to as game and are usually mammals and migratory or non-migratory gamebirds.

Of course both fox hunting and ambelopoulia trapping is against the law.

But there is a difference...

1. Fox hunting was considered a gentnelman's game, recreation in other words. It was "fun" to kill foxes.

2. Ambelopoulia trapping is considered inhumane and unlawful, a savage behaviour in behalf of the Cypriots. "food" was the reason behind this.

So, its OK to kill foxes for fun but not OK to trap birds for food...

Or, to re-phrase that, its OK to shoot game but not OK to trap it...

In other terms, gentlemen shoot where savages trap...

Make sense?

yiatre! :) :) :) !!!

I watched BBC Planet earth last night. The ambelopoulia flocks in Africa are so big, it might take up to 5 hours for one to fly overhead... millions of them. Definately, not an endangered species, unlike the fox... why not eat a few... control their population explosion... did I mention... these flocks will eat all vegetation & seeds within tens of sq kms where they land.

Considerind your hatred of british ,why are you watching the colonial BBC and secondly it is illegal HERE in cyprus , why not catch them in africa and import them????

Malta & Italy are closer than Africa...

To canada or Cyprus???????????

To Cyprus... why are you picking on me all the time?
I posted a nice joke on your thread... be nice will you?

Do you like to eat ambelopoulia? With koniakki?.......

Serios question can you eat birds in canada or do people frown on it???

Only quails are on sale here...

Please allow me to interject. For such small birds you use an airgun, not a shotgun. Now please carry on with discussion guys, it is mildly entertaining, in an airey/fairey sort of way.

The sport of hunting is very popular in Cyprus. Some 40,000 of them flood the countryside on the first day of "open" season. Things get pretty wild out there. Every year a couple of them are mistakenly shot by others...

Perdijia is the favorite bird species, a quail type that runs on the ground but flies at will. Inexperience hunters would shoot at anything that flies, even sparrows. Of course, nothing is left from the sparrow if shot by a shotgun... but it's fun...

My nephew had the heavy gauge cartridges one day so when he shot a rabbit (twice) the only thing found was the ears!

Hunting is banned in Lurucina soil, so at least the wildlife is enjoying life. You can see loads of Berdijya (Keklik) running around in the fields. Strangely we don't see any rabbits. Where is CBBB when you need him?
