Sport hunting explained

Postby georgios100 » Sat May 15, 2010 9:48 pm

copy/paste from Wiki...

Hunting is the practice of pursuing living animals (usually wildlife) for food, recreation, or trade. In present-day use, the term refers to lawful hunting, as distinguished from poaching, which is the killing, trapping or capture of the hunted species contrary to applicable law. The species which are hunted are referred to as game and are usually mammals and migratory or non-migratory gamebirds.

Of course both fox hunting and ambelopoulia trapping is against the law.

But there is a difference...

1. Fox hunting was considered a gentnelman's game, recreation in other words. It was "fun" to kill foxes.

2. Ambelopoulia trapping is considered inhumane and unlawful, a savage behaviour in behalf of the Cypriots. "food" was the reason behind this.

So, its OK to kill foxes for fun but not OK to trap birds for food...

Or, to re-phrase that, its OK to shoot game but not OK to trap it...

In other terms, gentlemen shoot where savages trap...

Make sense?

I watched BBC Planet earth last night. The ambelopoulia flocks in Africa are so big, it might take up to 5 hours for one to fly overhead... millions of them. Definately, not an endangered species, unlike the fox... why not eat a few... control their population explosion... did I mention... these flocks will eat all vegetation & seeds within tens of sq kms where they land.

No, more like robins, songbirds...

Two of the species often caught in mist nets are Cypriot endemics, the Cyprus warbler, Sylvia melanothorax, and the Cyprus wheatear, Oenanthe cypriaca.

Here is something interesting...
With the law enforcement taking effect, some Cypriot restaurateurs have been turning elsewhere for supplies of songbirds. Malta and Italy are seen as alternative sources, and one restaurateur discussed with an undercover reporter from the “Cyprus Mail” the possibility of buying songbirds frozen, by the container load.
