The Politics of Football : Cyprus

Postby Patto » Wed May 12, 2010 5:45 pm

Okay, so I asked this very question in the sports section but got little results.

I am trying to do some research into the politics surrounding Cypriot football. Based around the clubs beliefs along with those of the fans and the clubs officals.

I always see in the news related to football on the Island that certain clubs are nationalist etc.

I am just looking at getting some more details in the beliefs of the fans and clubs.

Which clubs support a Nation of Cyprus? Which support the greek community and which the turkish?

Any help and information will go a long way!

Basically there were right wing and left wing. The right in Cy is either Turkish or Greek, the left is Cypriot. Left wing teams were mixed. In Limassol for instance, it was just a normal team- AEL- but some players broke away and made a 'Greek' club, where AEL drifted to the left. I have no idea about the old TC clubs other than the legendary 'Chettin Kkayia' from Nicosia (which is 200% spelt wrong here)
In the RoC, some of the major teams-

LEFT

AEL- Limassol
Omonia- Nicosia
Nea Salamina- Famagusta

RIGHT

Apollon- Limassol
APOEL- Nicosia
Anorthosis- Famagusta

I HAVE NO CLUE

Evagoras- Paphos
Pafiakos- Paphos
Aris- Limassol

Sorry I cant be more help but I find football one-crushingly boring. Hopefully someone TC can help you with those teams- and someone who actually knows what theyre talking about can help with the RoC.
But there's a very interesting thought- if the left teams were mixed, and the right Nationalist, does that mean ALL teams in the North (of a certain age) are right wing? And are there any 'refugee' teams North- like the equivalent of Anorthosis?

Very little money in TRNC football as far as I know, just doesn't really pick up on nationalistic issues and rallying the youth to become more militant.

In Cyprus everything's about politics. If you drive a red car, you're automatically branded a communist.
If your dogs tail has a slight right curve you're considered pro-enosis. etc

 The sooner we stop molding ourselves around the 'Greek' model, the better for us.

A) neither Singapore or Frankfurt are 4000 years old.
B) SIngapore is 40-60 years old as far as I know and Frankfurt was flattened in the 2nd world war so they were both built recently since you like your skyscrapers.

If you've walked Athens and seen some of the unbelievable places this city holds you'd know how stupid you sound.

Is Istanbul also ugly to you?

Constantinople I dunno, never been, nor do I care.
I never doubted Athens fantastic ancient architecture. There are literally hundreds of gems dotted around the city.
I'm talking about the MODERN Greek architecture, the endless sea of 4 storey commie block chaos, untidy suburban mayhem, sub par infrastructure, smog, pollution, litter, unconducive road network, just a horrible planned city. We don't want Limassol and Nicosia looking like that.
