There are a good number of public and private sector hospitals and clinics throughout Cyprus. In general, the care and facilities in private hospitals and clinics are better than public hospitals, where standards are sometimes lower than those found in the UK. If you do not have private medical insurance, please make sure you are taken to a state hospital (where emergency treatment for European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) holders is free), and not taken to a private clinic.

Brit travellers buy health/accident insurance from agents/firms "carried" by major holiday agencies like Thomas Cook, Thompson Holidays etc.
When in need of medical help while in Cyprus, most of them go to private clinics to get treatment.

Be aware. These health insurance companies take forever to pay medical bills to the private clinics. In some cases, payment is refused all together. Clinic owners (usually the doctors) resort in litigation to collect unpaid fees & services. Lately, the clinics have the patient pay in advance out of pocket and provide him with the clinic invoice to be collected in the UK.

I witness the problem at a clinic owned by a relative of mine, in Larnaca. He had a pile of unpaid medical bills issued for payment from UK insurance companies.

Don't be fooled...

FO information is a guide to people wanting to travel to a particular country and this one on Cyprus is no more biased than it is for any other country.Wow,where is the sense of humour in Cyprus,so touchy and jumping down others throats for daring to have an opinion? The driving is abysmal as it is in many countries who have bad roads, battered old cars, children driving without a license and a complete disregard for the law.

Do you actually live in Cyprus? Have to agree about the disregard for the law and allowing their kids to drive their cars but not 'bad roads'.

They are a sight better than most of the roads in West Penwith, Cornwall and in South Devon in the UK.

Nor do I agree about the battered old cars. Geez - have you not SEEN the super motors they love to buy over here? They are known for it - especially as there is hardly anywhere to go in them!

Sadly it does seem that some GCs (on this forum) are totally incapable of laughing at themselves or their country. And they will brook not one single word of criticism.

Cypriots should go back to riding donkeys, bacause at least the ass has the good sence to stop when it sees danger ...

... unlike the asses driving cars in Cyprus!

Nonsense! Just because you can’t handle the nifty driving style of Cyprus doesn’t mean it’s bad. You just don't get it that's all.

Yes I do live in Cyprus part of the year and have you tried driving on the roads from Paphos to Polis lately?
The roads through the village to my place are like mountain tracks (lucky me) so a nice low slung mercedes is not the car of choice round there!
And yes,I have seen since 2005 when most cars were old pick ups to the 2007 sudden unleashing of stashed currency (undeclared for tax purposes) to the lovely big flashy twin cabs,Mercedes,BMWs etc that now are driven with the same disregard of their beauty and cost as if they were still old pick ups! Breaks my heart!

OK, I have left her a few times, but only out of necessity!
