There are a good number of public and private sector hospitals and clinics throughout Cyprus. In general, the care and facilities in private hospitals and clinics are better than public hospitals, where standards are sometimes lower than those found in the UK. If you do not have private medical insurance, please make sure you are taken to a state hospital (where emergency treatment for European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) holders is free), and not taken to a private clinic.
Brit travellers buy health/accident insurance from agents/firms "carried" by major holiday agencies like Thomas Cook, Thompson Holidays etc.
When in need of medical help while in Cyprus, most of them go to private clinics to get treatment.
Be aware. These health insurance companies take forever to pay medical bills to the private clinics. In some cases, payment is refused all together. Clinic owners (usually the doctors) resort in litigation to collect unpaid fees & services. Lately, the clinics have the patient pay in advance out of pocket and provide him with the clinic invoice to be collected in the UK.
I witness the problem at a clinic owned by a relative of mine, in Larnaca. He had a pile of unpaid medical bills issued for payment from UK insurance companies.
Don't be fooled...
