How much is import duty on a car, say a E220 merc,I saw one advertised for e33,000 about £30,000, in the UK you could pick up a 2006 E class for around £11,000-£15,000 depending on milage ect

Assuming its under 2250cc , automatic and approx 3-4 years old with over 6000 km's on the clock -

With shipping , duty, MOT, registration and road tax you would need to add 6500-7500 euro to the UK price

Dependant on shipping method and a few other factors

Ovearll on a like for like basis and even with a slightly higher euro\£ exchange rate - you should save approx 20% as a minimum

As an example my current Navarra cost me 14500 euro all in "on the road" - same car here approx 18000 euro everywhere I went

Lets just say I have imported a few vehicles     and its actually a pretty painless procedure.

You think that Merc has a lot of miles ? What about that American bloke with his Volvo P1800, 1966 model, original engine, gasoline, not Diesel. It is now closing in to 3.000.000 Miles/4.800.000 million kms. That's some whopping figures and it's been done by ONE driver, one CAR, ONE unaltered engine !!!

BTW, my father had a Opel Kadett E , 1985 version that he bought with more than 200.000 km's on the clock in the early 90's and he did about 600.000 before getting a different car few years ago. And it was driven on the harsh roads of Romania, not on the Autobahn.

It had the 1.6 Diesel engine (non-turbo), it was slow and sometimes it wouldn't start the first time in winter but other than that, a great car.

Nowadays the new cars on the market are simply disposables, they would not last as long.
