CUBA vs TRNC - A comparison

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

CUBA vs TRNC - A comparison

Postby georgios100 » Sat May 08, 2010 9:26 pm

While some are waiting/wanting for a solution to Cyprob others think or prefer for things to stay as they are, maintaining the non-recognition and embargoes to TRNC.
Like TRNC, Cuba is under embargo for over 45 years.

I've travelled to Cuba a few times (got some stories to tell) but really, is there any comparison between these two? Let's see:

1. Recognition. Cuba is, of course, recognized, a big plus for many sectors. TRNC is not. Recognition is a huge problem, effecting everything from commerce, imports, exports etc not to mention political issues.

2. Embargo. Cuba is under embargo but partially. Cuba can import certain products and some foreign investments are taking place (mainly hotel & tourism). The TRNC is in total embargo (except Turkey). Imports are done thru Turkey and Turkish investments are the main "meal". Limited, illegal investments by others are small.

3. Water & resources. Cuba is blessed with rains almost on a daily basis. The land is fertile, 2-3 crops per year with good forests for lumber supplies. Oil wells are scattered all over the north coast and elsewhere, providing almost enough to sustain the local demand. Lately, imports of oil from Venezuela complete the demand. Ocean fishing in good supply.
The TRNC has little water supplies and very little forests. The land is mostly mountains, considered semi-arid. There is no oil and hardly any fishing going on.

4. The land area of Cuba is 110,860 sq kms compared to the TRNC at 3,355 sq kms. In other words Cuba is approx 30 times larger.

Of course, one can examine further into this comparison but by just looking at the 4 paragraphs listed above, it is more than obvious, Cuba is by far better off than TRNC, the main reason as to why Cuba is self sustainable for half a century.

So, what's the point of this comparison one might ask?

Well, this comparison was posted for the people that want things to stay as they are in TRNC. This is pretty much the whole picture. Not much to brag about or look forward to. My fellow TCs, here it is in a nutshell. This is what you get when you "won" the war.

Cuba survived on Soviet handouts for decades but in recent years has learned to be more self-sufficient.

"TRNC" survived on Turkish handouts for decades and has yet to learn how to be self-sufficient.

Cuba's a great place to visit, though, if you want a bit more than sun, sea and sand.

Hey Hatter,

If you are a Cypriot you would know...

Greek CYs or Turkish CYs are all Cypriots.

One doesn't have to be a cypriot to know that.
Instead of stating the obvious, why don't you answer the question? "my fellow TCs" suggests that you are TC. So are you a TC then, Georgios100?

No, he is a fully-fledged Turk with an agenda to make the "trnc" appear mainstream, for example, akin to a sovereign country like Cuba!

Yeah, know what you mean... I always travelled alone in Cuba... why would anyone bring sand to the beach...

The rum is pure, best cigars, good honest food but above all... the local people are very friendly. Spectacular folklore dancing with traditional costumes, feathers... a great place to be. Maybe I should change my mind & retire in Cuba in lieu of Cyprus.
