Everything related to politics in Cyprus and the rest of the world.

Add 'Ottomans' to the list of people responsible.

Just reading that the root cause of all the tax avoidance in Greece dates back to when they had to pay the 'non Muslim tax'. They've had a morbid fear of paying tax ever since (apparently).

Bless 'em!

Talking of ancient tax, does anyone know where the phrase "Daylight robbery" comes from?

I looked it up and the it seems the definitive answers are --

pricing policy of a cypriot car dealer..

relationship of developer and client..

Governments view on its citizens

That's a little too sharp for my liking but to the point.

Not quite right.

The phrase comes from a particular type of taxation that was levied on Londoners at around the beginning of last century: The authorities (I think it was local authorities, as opposed to central government authorities) devised a method for calculating the tax amount due, based on the number of windows - the more/bigger the windows on a house, the higher the tax, on the basis that more windows=more affluent household, and therefore should pay more tax. This measure was perceived by many people as grossly unfair. In order to legally avoid tax, many households bricked-up some of their windows, which of course meant less daylight into their house - unfairly so. Hence the phrase "daylight robbery".

... and some. I would add the Americans, the Russians, the Brits, FBI, CIA, KGB, Gestapo and the rest of the world.

You see, what ever problems Greece or Cyprus have, are indeed attributed to all of the above. We blame all of them for our problems (when we can't solve them ourselves).

So, don't blame the innocent Greeks for their woes... but just all those listed above.
