It is an outward symbol of ones faith and automatically, internationally identifies the belief of that person . Some people also wear it as a reminder of the continued to act of sacrifice on their behalf and what the true cost of sin is.
The christian church has used the cross as the symbol to remind christians of the debt we owe God and the continued need to behave as it were. Originally on church adornements and rosary beads etc. As time progressed more and more people have kept this symbol and adapted it to jewellery.
From a selling point of view, a tiny image of jesus or mary would barely be recognisable and individuals could be wearing anything. The parishioners and jewellers have taken it upon themselves to chose this symbol as in the bible no outward symbols are required to show ones faith only ones individual actions. Which is probably why there is confusion to where this symbol has come from and why.
In Ireland a lot of people are given a gold cross at there first holy communion. It's just what happens untill you grow up and make your own educated choices about your beliefs.
