Solar panels

Is it correct that some small scale panels are connected to the public net, giving the owners a chance to earn a little money? If so, what kind of contract would you need and approx. how big would the investment be? Anyone having an idea about how long the pay-back time would be?

It is true...

You can either pay for it yourself (which gives the biggest per Kwh payback) or get a grant to install the system (40% I believe)...

The investment is large tho to get a decent return... I have a friend that has done it... also you need loadsaspace for the panels...

There are a number of companies... google BP Solar - they have an on-line application/information form...

Payback period is in the region of 10 years, despite what the suppliers say!

I keep asking what happens in case of a heavy hailstorm, but so far have nt received any clear responses from panel sellers.

Another question is what prevents anyone from plugging in a diesel generator to boost the power fed into the gid by the solar panels. Or even worse, to feed back to the grid regular power and get credit as if it were generated by solar panels. Scams like this have been discovered in Spain. No doubt they exist elsewhere too.

I have a friend with a big array of panels between here and Pafos - he has been using them for several years and as far as I am aware no maintenance problems...

He has a big control box thing that measures the power produced and uploaded to the grid - I'd imagine this is a sealed unit or something to avoid tampering or 'producing power at night!'

I could ask him if you want...?

It implies that they pay you better for the "solar-kWh" than it costs to produce 1 kWh from diesel. It's not likely, is it?

I think it is three times the normal 'cost' price of electricity...

It also implies that you are connected to the grid so you wouldn't need to generate the extra with diesel...

Another thing is that the electricity company only pays you their generating cost for the electricity you give them - the difference is paid by some EU body or other...
