Talks could resume on May 26

THE RESUMPTION of peace talks between the two sides will likely take place on May 26 and start from where they left off, according to reports yesterday.
UN Special Adviser Alexander Downer met with new Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu yesterday for an hour, during which Eroglu reportedly agreed to the Australian diplomat’s proposal for direct talks to restart at the end of the month. This will be the first official meeting between President Demetris Christofias and Eroglu since the latter replaced Mehmet Ali Talat last month.
According to Today’s Zaman, Eroglu told reporters after the meeting that the negotiations in Cyprus would most likely resume on May 26. Downer will likely confirm this date after meeting with Christofias today.
After the meeting, Downer said the new Turkish Cypriot leader had agreed that the talks would continue where they left off, and that the basis of the talks would be the UN parameters, UN Security Council resolutions and the agreements of May 23 and July 1 between Christofias and Talat on a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality and a single international personality.
“We want the talks to build on the convergences already achieved and not to start from the beginning,” said Downer.
“Mr Eroglu has made it clear that he is happy to proceed to the talks on those bases so we’re pleased to know that. We think that’s very constructive,” he added.
The UN diplomat is expected to make trips to Ankara and Athens in the coming weeks to prepare for the restart of talks, following unease that Eroglu’s hardline approach during his election campaign would cause the peace process to stutter. Downer highlighted that the process must continue and could not go on indefinitely.
Eroglu was quoted in the Turkish press saying that he told Downer he wanted to conclude negotiations within a certain time period and hold a referendum.
“Downer shares our ideas and thoughts. The United Nations shares the same notion with Turkish Cypriots that negotiations cannot go on forever,” Ero?lu was quoted in Today’s Zaman.
He also spoke to Downer about the issue of direct trade between the EU and the north. Eroglu said he would travel to Ankara before talks resume.
