Peace talks to resume in late May
By George Psyllides Published on May 5, 2010

THE UNITED Nations yesterday confirmed that talks between the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides will resume towards the end of this month and expressed their conviction that a solution can be reached this year.

“The two sides now seem happy to resume the negotiations in the week beginning May 24, one of those days during that week and to resume the talks from where they were left off; both sides agreed to that,” UN Special Adviser Alexander Downer told reporters after a meeting with President Demetris Christofias.

Downer said the exact day had not been finalised yet “but it is possible it will be on Wednesday (May) 26”.

“We will sort that up in the next few days.”

The UN official said a solution could be reached this year.

“Of course it can,” he said replying to a question. “I don’t know whether it will be, but it can, there is no question on that. I have always said that this in an agreement within the reach of the leaders.”

On Monday, Downer met Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu, who succeeded Mehmet Ali Talat.

[size=24]Downer reiterated that the talks would resume from where they were left off by Christofias and Talat.

“There were a series of convergences achieved over quite a long period of time – over 16-17 months or so – and there were quite a large number of convergences particularly on governance and power sharing; also on economy and the EU,” Downer said. “And we don’t expect all that to be reopened again and there was no suggestion from Mr Eroglu that he would reopen all that again.”

Downer said Eroglu had given his commitment to UN Security Council resolutions and to the parameters of the talks.

“From our point of view, the United Nations were pleased that both sides want to resume the talks on the basis of the parameters defined by the UN, the two statements the two sides issued on May 23 and July 1, 2008,” Downer said.
